Half Bottle: Muscat de Beaumes de Venise 2021, Durban
If there is one property you would want to live in in France, this would be the one! The Leydier family's property has a charming and typically French house with a panoramic view of the Ventoux in three directions.
The wine is now made by Madame Leydier's son Bernard who grows 25 hectares of 35 year old Muscat de Frontignan a petit grains blanc which he claims is far superior to the more normal Muscat de Frontignan a grains noir seen in the area. The yield is never in excess of 30 hectolitres per hectare so a concentration of flavour is almost guaranteed. Add to this that the grapes are harvested by hand and after a long, cold fermentation in tank, the wine remains on its fine lees for 4 or 5 months before a light filtration and the addition of pure alcohol to bring the strength up to 15% abv.
Smooth and silky with a great concentration of ripe, grapey fruit, fantastically balanced by a fresh acidity.
This is an outstanding estate in a village that is otherwise dominated by the local cooperative.
