Description

Boasting crisp acidity and a plump texture, this medium-bodied red shows dark cherry, muddled plum and blackberry fruit, with sweet spice and floral accents. Lightly grippy tannins match with herb and mineral details on the finish.

The wine is 100% Tannat, widely better known as the red grape of Madiran, but modern vineyard practices and advanced wine making techniques have helped to soften this traditionally formidable grape. The wine offers rich, dark raspberry and 'bramble' flavours with soft, ripe tannins and a delightful finish on the palate. The tannins leave a light but tell-tale 'grip' on the palate but they are so smooth, supported by a delicods...the Beret Noir does this with gusto whilst still keeping masses of ripe fruit to the fore. (ABV 13.5% - 2019)

Situated on the first rolling slopes of the Pyrenean foothills with villages clustered under hilltop castles (the area is often referred to as the French Tuscany), the Saint Mont appellation is in Gers, half-way between coastal Bayonne and Toulouse, and part of Gascony. It is noted for being amongst the most rural, least densely populated areas in Europe. The villages are small and far apart so agriculture is the main industry, helped by a warm but mild microclimate and excellent terroir. If you like peace and quiet whilst eating top class 'hearty' food, washed down by good value wine, then a holiday in the Gers would be ideal for you.

The name 'Beret Noir' is a reference (tongue in cheek?) to the long tradition of beret wearing vignerons in this area, where fashion has a minimal influence!
