Description

A beautifully smooth and velvety wine with great depth of fruit. (2020- 14% abv)

Produced by the world famous Lamberti winery at Tenuta Preella, Cavaion (less than 10 minutes drive from the shores of Lake Garda) but using grapes from the sun-drenched South of Italy. This is a 'baby' Amarone as the wine is made with the famous, and very expensive, Passimento technique. The first part of the harvest is picked at optimum ripeness and vinified separately to retain acidity and freshness while the remaining grapes are left on the vines to become even more ripe and sweet. Once harvested, approximately a month later than the original grapes, the best of this selection are then naturally air-dried in the attics/rafters of the wineries for another 30 days, losing 30% of their water through evaporation to leave densely flavoured, concentrated raisins. These are separately fermented and the young wine is put into small oak barrels for a year. It is then blended with the wine made from the 'normal' grapes and placed into large oak barrels, not for extra flavour but to soften the tannins and make the wine even more soft and generous on the palate.

This is not wine making by numbers but a slow, careful and genuinely artisan process needing highly skilled and intuitive winemakers. In Valpolicella, the prices of Amarone has spiralled sharply upwards (we did point out that it was a very expensive way to make wine) to the point where even the Ripassas, fermented on the lees of the Amarone, are causing raised eyebrows. Using grapes from the South has allowed Lamberti to make a true Passimento with all the correct techniques and attention to detail that you get from the top-end kit but which costs a fraction of the price. It works for us!

Aromas of fresh blackberry and plum with a touch of dried flowers. On the palate, the flavours are rich and velvety with dried fruits, black cherry, creamy vanilla and lots of spice.
