Description

1er Cru Classé Barsac

Only just behind d'Yquem in the 'sweetie' hierarchy, the 2005 Climens is likely to be very nearly one of the wines of the vintage. As usual, no final assemblage has been decided upon but of the components tasted, it was quite clear that this is going to be a monolithic wine with more acidity than the spectacular 2003. Excellent. Drink 2016 to 2035.

Climens' 29 hectares of vineyards, which benefit from excellent natural drainage, are sited on the highest part of the Barsac appellation and its complex geologicall make-up of red soil mixed with gravel, clay and irony sand make for very sophisticated wines indeed. Climens has, unusually, 100% Semillon because this variety thrives in its unique soils and is encouraged to form Botryits - the key element of fine sweet Bordeaux. It has been under the ownership of Lucien Lurton since 1971 and today it is his daughter, Bérénice, who oversees the estate.
