O'Cathain (pronounced O'Cahan) 8 Year Old Single Malt Irish Whiskey is a new Irish Whiskey released in 2016. It was triple distilled at the Cooley Distillery which is located on the Cooley Peninsula in County Louth. The distillery was founded in 1987 by John Teeling who turned it from a potato schnapps distillery into a whiskey distillery.
Matured for 8 years in old oak bourbon casks, chill-filtered and bottled at 40%, the colour is natural, no caramel colouring added. O Cathain yields hints of honey and warm vanilla.
The O'Caithain clan, after which the whiskey is named, were widely known as an Ulster Warrior Clan but on the 14th May 1260 suffered a catastrophic defeat at the the hands of the Normans at the battle of Down where many of their Clan Cheifs were slain. Their survivors though have had the last word as, now known as O'Kane, they have selected the casks for this blend as a tribute to their ancestors and the label shows scenes of the battle and so their name lingers on long after that of the Normans who beat them.
