Domaine Chicotot, Nuits St Georges, Côte de Nuits, Burgundy, France

The first of our 'Heritage' wines are from Domaine Chicotot. We have a very long standing relationship with this wonderful family and have been listing their range of consistently brilliant and extremely seductive wines for over 15 years. 

Situated on the main road going south out of Nuits, is the Chicotots' labyrinth of cellars and house, surrounding a pretty, flower-filled courtyard. This is very much a family affair, with Georges now in semi-retirement, tending his ‘jardin’ (as he describes his vineyards!) along with his son, Clément, who joined his parents in 2012. Wine making and the cellars are in the extremely capable hands of Pascale, who has elevated this estate into the Nuits premier league over the past ten years. Herbicides and pesticides have not been used for over a decade and with the vines pruned in gobelet, yields are very low. Severe selection is followed by a very traditional vinification, with an eighteen month élevage in oak barriques (only 20% new oak is used), using no battonage, racking or filtration.

These are deliciously pure, seductive and concentrated wines with an overt expression of terroir. Les Charmottes comes from 55 year-old vines on the Vosne side of the   village and is pure and elegant. Pruliers is rich and polished and the Plantes au Baron comes from 70 year-old vines in a lieu-dit just below the great Les Saint-Georges Premier Cru. This is more substantial and concentrated with a hint of the Les Saint-Georges power. The Rues de Chaux is a wonderfully complex wine with incredible length and the Vaucrains is packed with inherently juicy raspberry and wild strawberry fruits. 

All the Premier Crus show real concentration and structure but with an impressive covering of profoundly ripe fruit. This is a very serious selection of classic Nuits-St.-Georges.
