Château Pontet-Canet Vintage Offer, Pauillac

Château Pontet-Canet

5eme Cru Classé, Pauillac

Château Pontet-Canet was purchased by Guy Tesseron (Alfred’s father) in 1975. This outstanding property covers a total area of just over 80 hectares, with vines averaging 45 years of age, situated on a terroir of Quaternary gravel, in the heart of classic Pauillac country. Its immediate neighbours are Mouton Rothschild and Lynch-Bages and the vineyards are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (63%), Merlot (32%) Cabernet Franc (4%) and Petit Verdot (1%) The wine is aged in oak barrels (50% in new barrels) and concrete amphorae for 16 months.

We have been regular buyers of Château Pontet-Canet for many years and over that time, we have built up a strong relationship with the château, managing to purchase meaningful allocations ever since the 2004 vintage. Nowadays, Château Pontet-Canet is performing at Super Second level, and many Bordeaux ‘watchers’ feel that, in certain years, it is right up there with some of its First Growth colleagues.  Since 2004, proprietor, Alfred Tesseron, has farmed the estate bio-dynamically and in more difficult years, like 2012, the energy and purity of this very fine wine is all apparent.

Vintage 2011

Alfred Tesseron bottled the superb 2011 vintage in an engraved, heavy bottle and it is intense and vibrant, with a beautiful structure. The palate is balanced, lustrous and silky, with a deep, classic purple colour and a definitive ‘Pauillac nose’ of graphite, tobacco and cassis. This is undoubtedly a refined, pure and seamless Pontet-Canet with crème de cassis and cedar covering gossamer-fine tannins. [drink now until 2030]

Vintage 2012

Robert Parker wrote of this vintage, in the Wine Advocate (30/04/2015):

“This impeccably run, biodynamically farmed estate of Alfred Tesseron goes from strength to strength. The 2012 triumphs once again with its notes of dark plum, blackcurrant, licorice and almost a hint of truffle, its full-bodied, supple tannins, and beautiful, expensive mouthfeel. Complex and deep, this dense ruby/purple-colored wine may not be at the level of the 2009 or 2010, but it is a successful wine in this vintage, and a significant wine in 2012. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2035”

Our recent tastings of this vintage have confirmed that this thoroughbred has remarkable precision, depth and freshness and given the wines’ sheer quality, offers remarkable value.

  • Offer Price: £85 per 75cl. bottle and £185 per 150cl. magnum

Vintage 2014

This is Alfred Tesseron’s tenth bio-dynamic and organic vintage and ever since 2016, it has shown spectacularly well in blind tastings. The vineyards are worked by horses and the grapes are hand-sorted by a team of 30 people, using specially made tables de triage. The élevage was in 50% new oak, 15% one-year-old barrels and 35% concrete amphorae. It has a bright purple colour in the glass and a complex bouquet of blueberry, vanilla and black cherry on the nose. The front-facing flavours can only be described as being juicy, dominated by blackcurrant and black cherry fruit but the very long finish rests on a refreshing, clean acidity.

  • Offer price: £99 per 75cl. bottle and £175 per 150cl. magnum
