Château de Grandmont Beaujolais-Villages Nouveau 2020
2020 - wonderfully ripe with extraordinary freshness
2020 has been an unprecedented year for numerous reasons and this very much includes the Beaujolais region, in terms of the drought and very early harvest date (second only to 2003!). At Château de Grandmont, we started picking on the 22nd August with the grapes in perfect health; the Gamay seems to be adapting well to climate change. Flowering took place between the 24th and 30th May and by July, the vines were lacking rainfall but the fact that, at Grandmont we have been ploughing the soil ever since we began converting to organics in 2015, has meant that the vines’ roots search deep down into the soil for moisture and minerals, helping to prevent hydric-stress.
The phenolically ripe grapes were hand-harvested in perfect conditions and our alcohol levels were, on average around 13˚2 abv with a beautifully balancing acidity, giving the wines great freshness and vivacity. The grapes’ skins were full of pigment and therefore, the wines are deep-coloured. It was important not to over-extract during the fermentation, to avoid any astringency. These are very ripe wines with black fruit domination, which will be immediately appealing and very primeur in style.
With Brexit on the horizon, this maybe the last time that we see Beaujolais Nouveau in the UK (for a while at least) and given the excellent quality of the vintage and the need to inject some sunshine and fun into our lives, what better an excuse to throw a November Nouveau party and celebrate. Santé!
Deliveries will be during the week beginning 16th November. Under EU law, the wine may not be opened until 00.01hrs. on Thursday, 19th November, 2020. All delivery charges are as per our web site.
