Beaujolais 2019 En Primeur Offer

BEAUJOLAIS 2019 EN PRIMEUR OFFER

Whilst the current trend is to make ‘en primeur’ offers for Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rhône and northern Italian wines, it occurred to us that we are extremely well placed to offer our customers some of the very top wines from the Beaujolais region. In recent years, the new generation of Beaujolais vignerons and winemakers has lifted the region’s reputation to a new level. The wines that we are offering are all hand-crafted from outstanding vineyard sites and will age well over the next 3-5 years (or more in some cases). With Chris Piper’s profound involvement in the Beaujolais region over the past 45 years, there is probably no one better to search out some of the most exciting and leading wines. With the prices of Burgundy sky-rocketing over the past few years, the crus of Beaujolais are clearly exceptional value.

The 2019 Vintage

With the exception of the St. Amour, we are offering wines from the relatively low-yielding 2019 vintage; very much a Beaujolais purists’ vintage with the wines showing great precision and freshness., combined with an appealing concentration. Aromatically, they have clear-cut floral bouquets (often violet, iris and peony) with undertones of black fruit. 2019s are plump and juicy cru Beaujolais but without any of the cumbersome heaviness seen in some of the higher alcohol vintages. There are fine, layered tannins and a discreet seam of balancing acidity that will ensure that those who want to keep these wines will not be disappointed. If, however, you prefer your Beaujolais with more primary fruit, then there is an attractive openness that will make the 2019s very easy to drink.

Yannick de Vermont took over the reins of his family’s estate in 2014 and has been gradually transforming this impressive 22 ha. property into one of the leading Beaujolais-Villages producers. A naturally talented wine maker, Yannick has concentrated on making wines of impressive depth and richness, vinifying his parcels separately. The Clos de Valentin is situated on a vertiginous hillside behind the family’s house; the vines are 60 years’ old, pruned in the classic gobelet format, giving a tiny yield of perfectly mature deep-coloured grapes. This exceptional wine is certainly up there with many top crus exuding spicy, black fruit [Drink from now until 2024]

Situated just below the Côte de Brouilly, on south-eastern facing slopes, this is a small 3-hectare vineyard which has been converted to organic production since 2013. Wine-making has been by Chris Piper who, since 2001, has played an important part in converting the vineyards to organic production. A cold soak precedes a carefully managed eight day fermentation, using indigenous yeasts;. Whilst making sure that there is no over extraction, this is a full-bodied Brouilly with fine-grained tannins and the potential to keep for at least six years. Deep-purple, juicy and textured, combining finesse with great complexity. There are no added sulphites except a very small amount at the time of bottling. [Drink from now until 2025]

The Clos de Rochebonne is an east-facing 16th century “clos”, situated in the commune of Theizé, in the heart of the Pierres Dorées region, in the south of Beaujolais. The clay-limestone subsoil is ideal for Chardonnay and results in wines of great freshness. Recently converted to organic viticulture, the hand-harvested grapes are lightly pressed and the cold-clarified juice is fermented in a mix of 1-10 year-old oak barrels. The fermentation and élevage was on the fine lees, over eight months and the 2019 has just been released; the nose combines floral, lime and stone-fruit aromatics with peach and apricot textured flavours and a lovely minerality. Given the balancing acidity, this is a wine that will develop well over the next 2-3 years. [Drink from now until 2024].

Château Thivin is one of Beaujolais’ most iconic properties where Claude-Edouard Geoffray is justifiably proud of its historic roots. Claude-Edouard is also a forward thinking wine maker and viticulturist incorporating sustainable production with minimal intervention in the cellars. The Griottes de Brulhé is a 5ha. parcel of 45 year-old Gamay, planted on Pierre Bleu (Metadiorite); the vineyard is currently in organic conversion. Meticulous wine making is followed by an élevage of 8 months in large oak foudres. This has long been one of our favourite Thivin cuvées and the 2019 shows off the typical black cherry and spice fruit associated with it. A lovely crunchy, crisp juici-ness is backed by a long, minerally finish. [Drink from now until 2026]

DOMAINE RÉMY PASSOT ET FILS, Chiroubles [Rémy Passot]
CHIROUBLES 2019

  • PER DOZEN BOTTLES: £151.44
  • PER BOTTLE: £12.98
[EXPLOITANT HAUTE-VALEUR ENVIRONNEMENTALE] NO DE-STALKING

Chiroubles is the highest altitude cru, meaning that it is generally the latest to harvest and the earliest drinking of the Beaujolais ‘family’. Rémy Passot’s wine is a complex blend from four lieu-dits (Bel Air, les Grandes Terres, Crozet and Souzon), situated between 340-500 metres altitude, all of which have light, sandy and easy-draining soils, based on decomposed granite. Clear-cut aromas of raspberries, blackberries and cherries, along with floral (iris and violet) notes give way to a juicy, full-bodied, ample and fleshy wine, with real structure but a wonderful freshness. [Drink from now until 2023]

CHATEAU DE GRANDMONT, Blacé-en-Beaujolais [Laurent Santailler]
MORGON Corcelette 2019

70% DE-STALKED
From an old-vine parcel (70 years’ old) in the prestigious lieu-dit of la Corcelette, this profound wine offers up enticing aromas of liquorice, cherries and blackberries leading into a full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping palate with ripe, fine-grained tannins and succulent acids. The one-hectare parcel, situated at a relatively high altitude of 470 metres, is planted with gobelet pruned Gamay on decomposed granite and alluvial soils. The low yielding 2019 vintage (32hl/ha.), made by Chris Piper, is built to last, with the wine seeing 10 days of classic semi-maceration carbonique followed by 10 months of élevage in cement tank. [Drink from 2022-2027]

CHATEAU DE LA CHAIZE, Odénas [Christophe & Boris Gruy]
FLEURIE La Chapelle des Bois 2019
  • PER DOZEN BOTTLES: £207.60
  • PER BOTTLE: £17.66

[EXPLOITANT HAUTE-VALEUR ENVIRONNEMENTALE] 10% DE-STALKED
Following the death of our dear friend, Fernand Verpoix, in 2018, his family decided to sell their Chapelle des Bois vineyards to the new owners of one of Beaujolais most outstanding properties, Château de la Chaize. Christophe Gruy and his nephew, Boris (who is the head wine-maker) have decided to keep all their Fleurie parcels separate, with la Chapelle des Bois (3.2ha. of 90 year-old vines) as the star in the firmament. 2019 is their first release of this outstanding cuvée which was classically vinified, using indigenous yeasts, with an 8-day semi-maceration carbonique and 10 months élevage in large oak foudres. The 2019 is a real success, showing no signs of over-extraction with complex aromas of plums, raspberries and pomegranate combined with hints of rose petals and spice. A silky, soft Fleurie with real precision and underlying concentra-tion, giving it great length. [Drink from now until 2025]

DOMAINE PAUL JANIN ET FILS, Romanèche-Thorins [Eric Janin]

MOULIN-À-VENT Héritage 2019

NO DE-STALKING (ONLY AVAILABLE IN LIMITED QUANTITIES)

  • PER SIX BOTTLES: £124.92
  • PER BOTTLE: £21.18

Eric Janin, a long-standing supplier and friend of ours, is one of Beaujolais’ most respected growers and talented wine makers. With 8½ hectares of vineyards, this is not a large estate but it is one of the most prominent in the Beaujolais region. Eric has the skill of making great, concentrated Moulin-à-Vents with a phenomenal freshness and this is emphasised through the classical nature of the 2019 vintage. The Vignes du Tremblay (mostly 40 year-old vines from les Greneriers, les Pérelles, Champs de Cours and les Brussellions) has aromas of cherries, red berries, pain d’épices and rose petals. Fourteen days of classic Beaujolais fermentation has resulted in a ripe, fleshy and succulent wine with some decent young tannins and fine length. [Drink from 2021 until 2030]. The Héritage is Janin’s top cuvée, with an assertive concentration and wonderful precision; coming from parcels of old vines (80-100 years’ old) yielding a miniscule 16hl./ha. This is a wine that combines structure, freshness and richness and embodies everything that Moulin-à-Vent is about. [Drink from 2022 until 2035].

  • PER BOTTLE: £12.98

Laurent Perrachon and his wife, Martine, run this impeccable 23 hectare family domaine, now with the help of their two older sons, Adrien and Maxime. These are traditionally made, serious wines that have great terroir integrity, where the vines are an average of 45 to 60 years old. Long fermentations and indigenous yeasts are par for the course. The St. Amour la Gagère (2020) comes from 0.5ha of 55 year-old vines and undergoes a ten-day maceration and is then aged for six months in concrete vats, retaining the wine’s intrinsic freshness. This is not a wine for long-term laying down and is just simply delicious in its youth. les [Drink from now until 2024]. The Juliénas les Vignes Centenaires is from 100+ year-old vines in the la Bottière lieu-dit and undergoes a 15-day fermentation followed by 12 months in a mix of French oak. Great complexity combined with amazing energy, makes this a classic in every sense of the word. [Drink from 2023 until 2035].
