This estate, and no doubt the subsequent 2 estates, has always been regarded as being amongst the top estates of Puligny. It was not all that long ago that the Chavys sold the vast majority of their wines to the negotiants of the area but, in the past ten years, they bottled a large percentage of their production themselves.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTheir scrupulous attention to detail, and desire to keep to low yields, has resulted in a range of classic Puligny wines. Following a spell as wine-maker at Saltram Winery and the Southern Vales Co-operative, he established a small-scale operation in the McLaren Vale, selecting grapes from top, local growers and then making small, yet commercial, quantities of rich, boldly flavoured varietals. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe Simon Hackett story goes back well before the establishment of Simon Hackett Wines. Four generations of the Hackett family followed agricultural pursuits in South Australia. In 1860, Simon's great uncle attended the esteemed Roseworthy Agricultural College whilst Simon's father was a graduate in the inaugural Oenology Course at the college in 1938. Simon grew up in an atmosphere steeped in wine, spending his boyhood in the Barossa Valley alongside his father, who was General Manager and a Director of the giant Barossa Valley Distillery, Tarac International. The family home was situated next to the sprawling Saltram Winery outside Angaston.Given this environment, it was not surprising that Simon, at the age of eighteen, elected to follow a career in winemaking and joined the team at the neighbouring Saltram Winery.Serving his apprenticeship under the watchful eye of master winemaker, Peter Lehmann, Simon progressed through the 'Saltram ranks'. In 1970 he completed a vintage in the Hunter Valley Region of New South Wales, before returning to the Saltram Winery for another two years.In 1973 Simon decided to move to McLaren Vale thus his association with the region began and continues today. The Dr L is a lightish style, very fresh and perfectly balanced, and of Kabinett quality, even though he chooses to declassify to Qualitätswein. Although there is some residual sweetness, the perfect balancing acidity make it a perfect match for a huge variety of dishes, from spicy Asian foods to Charcuterie and Sauerkraut. It is delicious with most white fish dishes. (2018 - 8% abv)\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe Loosen Estate goes back some 200 years, and Ernst took over in 1985 due to his father's ill health. At 27 years old he had some doubts about leaving his studies in archeology (having graduated in viticulture at Giesenheim) but soon began to enjoy what he was doing.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBy 1987 he realised that a complete change in attitude was necessary, and having been deserted by all of the vineyard staff, he appointed old school friend, Bernhard Schug, as winemaker. Bernhard was hitherto untrained and a confirmed beer drinker! The 1987 vintage produced some of the finest wines the estate had ever made, as \"treatment\" of the wine was kept to an absolute minimum - a little filtering, no fining and meticulous hygiene in the cellar. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSince then, the Estate has gone from strength to strength picking up most of the awards that Germany has to offer over the years.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn all he owns some 11.5 hectares (28 acres) of Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards along the Mosel, and has the distinct advantage of vines aged between 60 and 100 years old.
