Tamdhu 12 Year Old, Speyside

Product Description
Speyside

Tamdhu is a mild malt, well constructed with a clean, Speyside character. The nose is sweetish, slightly biscuity and lightly malted with a whiff of smoke; the flavour is very slightly toffee-like but this develops into a dry, peaty/smoky finish.

Tamdhu distillery was created in 1896-97 by a blenders group, but became 2 years later part of the Highland Distillers & Co, who still are the owners nowadays. The distillery was closed from 1911 to 1913, then from 1927 till 1948 and its production capacity was doubled in 1972.

In 1975 the number of stills grew to 6. The Tamdhu distillery produces its own malt, using a Saladin box. (Charles Saladin, a Frenchman, invented a process able to rationalize the production of malt. He substituted a kind of box (50 meter long and 1,5 meter deep) to the traditional malting floors. This box has metallic mixers to avoid destruction of the grain by the warmth produced by the germination. Aeration happens by micro perforations in the bottom of the box. Some distilleries installed such a system, even if most of the distilleries stopped producing their malt).

The major part of the production is used in the blends Famous Grouse, J&B and Cutty Sark.
