500ml: Stormstay, Hanlons Brewery, Crediton
STORMSTAY (5.0% abv) Stormstay is Hanlons’ premium bitter, essentially a strong amber ale, dark amber to copper in colour with a toffee and floral hop nose and hints of tangerine. Malt caramel and biscuit merge with the two aromatic hops, Bobeck and Cascade, the latter bringing in a clean, refreshing balance against the weight of the alcohol. Remarkably smooth, with hints of toffee and citrus.
The story of Hanlons started in 1995 when John O’Hanlan set up a micro-brewery in London, making some of England’s first craft beers. By 2000, John and his wife, Liz, moved to a site just outside Exeter and for the next twelve years, carved a very strong local reputation for their fine beers and stout. In 2013, they sold their business to Dan Taylor and Jim Bungard, today’s current owners, who moved the brewery to Half Moon village, near Crediton. Initially just concentrating on cask ales, they began to bottle almost their entire range, so that today there are five regular bottlings of these amazing brews.
