La Tremenda Monastrell 2020 Alicante D.O.
Enrique Mendoza, Alicante, Spain.
Made from 100% Monastrell, which is also known as Mourverdre in France and elsewhere, this is grown in the harsh and arid conditions in the countryside around Alicante by Enrique Mendoza and the wine is named after the vineyard.
The wine shows expressive notes of fresh black cherries and red berries with hints of sweet spice, toast and cocoa. The palate is full and shows silky texture, liveliness and long length and makes for a very accessible wine. (abv 14.5% 2020)
The vines are planted at about 2000 feet above sea level in the mainly sand and limestone soil found at this height, they are harvested by hand and the grapes undergo fermentation in stainless steel tanks with the juice being pumped over the fruit regularly. The wine is aged in two to three year old American oak barrels for 6 months before being bottled and then kept for a further 12 months before being released.
