500ml: Port Stout, Hanlons Brewery
PORT STOUT (4.8% abv) Dark, chestnut beer whose bitter chocolate and roast malt taste comes from the large dose of roast barley added. This is softened by the addition of rich Ruby Port, combining the hoppy pepperiness from the Phoenix and Bobek hops with vinous alcoholic fruitiness. There are hints of chocolate, coffee and port!
The story of Hanlons started in 1995 when John O’Hanlan set up a micro-brewery in London, making some of England’s first craft beers. By 2000, John and his wife, Liz, moved to a site just outside Exeter and for the next twelve years, carved a very strong local reputation for their fine beers and stout. In 2013, they sold their business to Dan Taylor and Jim Bungard, today’s current owners, who moved the brewery to Half Moon village, near Crediton. Initially just concentrating on cask ales, they began to bottle almost their entire range, so that today there are five regular bottlings of these amazing brews.
