The remarkable Madame Clicquot (1777-1866) is often considered the first businesswoman of the modern era. Born Nicole-Barbe Ponsardin, she was widowed in 1805 at the age of 27. Pol chose not to follow his father's footsteps, but received his support when he announced that he wanted to set up as a negociant or wholesaler. This he did at the age of seventeen using his father's business contacts as customers.

1849 saw the birth of the new Champagne house as Pol began to create his own cuv‚es rather than bringing in wine from other houses. The first Pol Roger Cuv‚es went on sale in 1853 and his sales in the first six months were 3769 bottles and 825 half bottles. Today that has grown to around 1.5 million per annum.

Pol Roger recently celebrated its 150th anniversary and is perhaps best known as Winston Churchill's favourite Champagne. Contrary to widespread fears, the resultant crop was healthy as well as abundant, and Pol Roger was able to declare the vintage. The growing cycle was a difficult one through most of its stages, one of its early features being the great gale which swept across Northern France on 26th December. The spring was wet and mild, but the sun came out for the flowering in the middle weeks of June. July opened with hailstorms on the 2nd, followed by three times the average rainfall for the month. If these rains were to determine the quantity, ?Ao–t fait le go–t? and, despite some further scattered hailstorms the weather settled down to give dry and warm conditions for the picking, which began in the earliest Crus on 13th September.

The grapes came in in sound condition and produced musts with an average alcohol of 9.9§(slightly above the average for the decade), a total acidity of 7.6g/l H2S04, and a relatively high pH of 3.11.

Born Nicole-Barbe Ponsardin, she was widowed in 1805 at the age of 27. Veuve Clicquot ( Veuve means widow in French) defied every convention of the day to take the helm of her late husband's small Champagne house. She enlisted help wisely, took astute risks and made important technological innovations (including the invention of remuage or riddling), leading the House to world renown. One of her most significant triumphs was sending a secret shipment of her Champagne to Russia in 1814 in defiance of Napoleon's blockade--a great success.

Today the House of Veuve Clicquot is among the most prestigious Champagne firms. For a more unusual duo, the more adventurous will try a dish of crayfish … l'armoricaine or good quality poultry cooked in sauce.

Drink Now

Aperitif

Dry

Light Bodied

Pale Gold

Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay

Reims, Champagne, France

Veuve Cliquot

2008
"}

Ever since, the firm has been run by a father and son partnership and this is one of the things that makes Krug such an outstanding company. The Krugs are also perfectionists and it is not unusual for 50 different wines from 25 different villages, 10 different vintages and three different grape varieties to go into their 'house' wine, the Grande Cuv‚e NV. Typically some 30 to 35% of the blend comes from older wines.

All Krug's wines are vinified in 205 litre barrels made from weathered Argonne oak which lends flavour to the wine but in no way dominates the final balance.

Its extensive vineyard holdings, many originally purchased by Madame Clicquot, stretch throughout the top-rated areas of the Champagne region and are unparalleled in size and quality. As in Mme.
