Malbec Anubis 2020 Susanna Balbo
This Malbec is deep-coloured and definitely full of ripe, plummy/spicy fruit. It is deliciously and jam-packed with fruit.
Tasted here 23/04: old style Malbec (6 months in French oak) that punches way above its price. Rich and meaty (newer styles of Malbec are much gentler than people assume) with robust flavours of damson, cassis, cocoa, spicy plum and a gentle layer of creamy vanilla.
Anubis is an exciting joint-venture between Alberto Antonini (ex-winemaker at Antinori in Tuscany) and the brilliant Argentinean wine-maker, Susana Balbo, in whose winery (Dominio del Plata) the Anubis range is made. Fruit for the vintage was sourced from the Agrelo and Vistalba regions, widely recognised as the quality heartland of Mendoza. Our two red wines from this estate show off the wine-making prowess of this Argentine/Italian team - these are modern, richly fruity and extracted wines with an open, approachable style. 13.5% abv 2016
The fruit for this very tasty little 100% Malbec comes from Luj n de Cuyo at around 950 metres above sea level. The secret to its success is its simplicity, its soft texture, its attractive fruity aromatics with a hint of violets. The wine spends 6 months in used oak before release to give just a subtle kiss of vanilla.
