This wine is from a small parcel of 28 acres, on a very rocky soil, on the most northern part of the Saint Amour appellation, overlooking the village of Saint-Véran. This is a sensual and delicate wine with a great personality. On the nose there are floral notes of iris, violets, lily of the valley and peonies. The palate is typically gamay with delicious mouth filling juicy red fruits and balancing acidity with a smooth fruity finish.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe total area of the Chiroubles Cru AOC is some 350 hectares and mostly comprises light degraded granite sandy soil with generally a South-Western facing aspect. Domaine Passot have 4 plots in the AOC namely Bel Air, Les Grandes Terres, Crozet and Souzon. The average age of the vines is some 50 years old. The vines are head pruned and the resultant cuttings are shredded and spread over the vineyards as a mulch. 25% of the plots are grass-seeded for hydric competition to force the vines to seek out moisture and nutrients lower in the soil levels. The vines are planted so as to allow narrow tractors to work around them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHarvesting is carried out by hand and fermentation in the classic Beaujolais fashion ie maceration semi-carbonique, takes place in temperature controlled vats for between 7 and 9 days. The wine is aged in either stainless steel or epoxy coated cement vats for 7 months and bottled in the following April or May. It comes from a granite and quartz covered, perilously steep hillside, behind the house and cellars. This is a massive intense and rich wine.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt just over 30 years old, Paul-Henri Thillardon is the youngest vigneron-winemaker that we deal with. From a Beaujolais family, who have grown grapes in the Pierres Dor‚es for over a century, Paul-Henri and his brother, Charles, created the domaine, out of nothing, in 2008. They started out with 2.30 ha. in the BlŠmonts lieu-dit and then, in 2009, added a further couple of hectares (in m‚tayage) at Chƒteau des Boccards, situated on the more granitic soils of Les Deschamps. Conversely, les BlŠmonts, (where les CarriŠres is sourced) has a terroir that has a high level of schist, with veins of quartz and manganese. The 45 year-old vines are planted on a south-facing slope in an old quarry (carriŠre) and have been certified organic since 2007. Paul-Henri uses biodynamic treatments on his vines and ploughs using a Trait Comtois (a traditional plough-horse) thereby avoiding soil compaction through the use of tractors and also improving the soil?s aeration.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePaul-Henri has gradually been building himself a reputation as being somewhat of an iconic wine-maker and grower amongst the new dynamic younger generation, who are helping to reinvigorate the Beaujolais region. At the end of 2012, he and Charles bought the run down buildings of the once famous Domaine de Chassignol, situated in les Brureaux, along with five hectares of stunning vineyards on the vertiginous hillsides behind the property. Although needing some restoration, these are some of the best-sited vineyards in the Chenas appellation. This is a man on a mission, with a passion and motivation that has obviously helped persuade his bank manager to come up with the necessary loan! The two brothers have now also renovated the old cellars and cuvage.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVinification leans towards the Burgundian style, with 100% de-stemming and a long, low-extractive fermentation which results in racy, taught and precise wines with intense fruitiness and nano-tannins. Paul-Henri keeps life in his cellar as simple as possible, allowing his wines to evolve as naturally as possible. He uses almost no sulphites, just a tiny little dose prior to bottling. Elevage is in old concrete vats and ?les CarriŠres? is bottled non-filtered, normally just after Easter following the harvest. It is a wine that can be broached fairly early in its life but can develop well, in good vintages for 3-4 years. They started out with 2.30 ha. in the BlŠmonts lieu-dit and then, in 2009, added a further couple of hectares (in m‚tayage) at Chƒteau des Boccards, situated on the more granitic soils of Les Deschamps. Conversely, les BlŠmonts, (where les CarriŠres is sourced) has a terroir that has a high level of schist, with veins of quartz and manganese. The 45 year-old vines are planted on a south-facing slope in an old quarry (carriŠre) and have been certified organic since 2007. Paul-Henri uses biodynamic treatments on his vines and ploughs using a Trait Comtois (a traditional plough-horse) thereby avoiding soil compaction through the use of tractors and also improving the soil?s aeration.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePaul-Henri has gradually been building himself a reputation as being somewhat of an iconic wine-maker and grower amongst the new dynamic younger generation, who are helping to reinvigorate the Beaujolais region. At the end of 2012, he and Charles bought the run down buildings of the once famous Domaine de Chassignol, situated in les Brureaux, along with five hectares of stunning vineyards on the vertiginous hillsides behind the property. Although needing some restoration, these are some of the best-sited vineyards in the Chenas appellation. This is a man on a mission, with a passion and motivation that has obviously helped persuade his bank manager to come up with the necessary loan! Paul-Henri keeps life in his cellar as simple as possible, allowing his wines to evolve as naturally as possible. He uses almost no sulphites, just a tiny little dose prior to bottling. Elevage is in old concrete vats and ?les CarriŠres? is bottled non-filtered, normally just after Easter following the harvest. It is a wine that can be broached fairly early in its life but can develop well, in good vintages for 3-4 years. The Les Vignes du Tremblay is sourced from 4« hectares of vines (whose age is between 25 and 80 years? old) grown on sand-dominated soils in les Greneriers, Burdelines, Champ du Cour, Perelles and Brusellions. The 2013 yields were 29hl.\/ha. and this intense, rich and powerful Moulin saw 8 months ‚levage in old 45hl. foudres. It has an intensity and succulence of blackberry, plum and cassis flavours, intertwined with a floral backdrop. There is a tension, minerality and purity in the wine which ensures a remarkable balance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Janin?s 8 hectare domaine was established in the early 1930?s, when Eric Janin?s grandfather bought two hectares of vines in the remarkable terroir of le Tremblay (nowadays, known as les Burdelines). Paul, Eric?s father, added further parcels in the 1960?s, situated in the lieux-dits of Greneriers, Champ du Cour, Perelles and Brusellions. In 2013, the Janins purchased a small old-vine parcel of 60 year-old vines in the high-altitude les Caves lieu-dit. It is this mosaic of different terroirs that make the Janin?s wines so complex and interesting. Eric Janin?s philosophy is to let the ?soil talk through his wines?. Although not certified organic, his work in the vineyards is based on the principle of restoring the soil to its natural balance, allowing the flora and fauna to re-establish itself. Over the past ten years, the soil has been worked by hand and nearly all treatments and fertilisers have been organically based. Eric?s vinifications are traditional, with whole-bunch, open vat fermentation for 12-15 days, with regular pigeages and pump-overs. It has an intensity and succulence of blackberry, plum and cassis flavours, intertwined with a floral backdrop. There is a tension, minerality and purity in the wine which ensures a remarkable balance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Janin?s 8 hectare domaine was established in the early 1930?s, when Eric Janin?s grandfather bought two hectares of vines in the remarkable terroir of le Tremblay (nowadays, known as les Burdelines). Paul, Eric?s father, added further parcels in the 1960?s, situated in the lieux-dits of Greneriers, Champ du Cour, Perelles and Brusellions. In 2013, the Janins purchased a small old-vine parcel of 60 year-old vines in the high-altitude les Caves lieu-dit. It is this mosaic of different terroirs that make the Janin?s wines so complex and interesting. Eric Janin?s philosophy is to let the ?soil talk through his wines?. Although not certified organic, his work in the vineyards is based on the principle of restoring the soil to its natural balance, allowing the flora and fauna to re-establish itself. Over the past ten years, the soil has been worked by hand and nearly all treatments and fertilisers have been organically based. Eric?s vinifications are traditional, with whole-bunch, open vat fermentation for 12-15 days, with regular pigeages and pump-overs. Paul-Henri uses biodynamic treatments on his vines and ploughs using a Trait Comtois (a traditional plough-horse) thereby avoiding soil compaction through the use of tractors and also improving the soil?s aeration.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePaul-Henri has gradually been building himself a reputation as being somewhat of an iconic wine-maker and grower amongst the new dynamic younger generation, who are helping to reinvigorate the Beaujolais region. At the end of 2012, he and Charles bought the run down buildings of the once famous Domaine de Chassignol, situated in les Brureaux, along with five hectares of stunning vineyards on the vertiginous hillsides behind the property. Although needing some restoration, these are some of the best-sited vineyards in the Ch‚nas appellation. This is a man on a mission, with a passion and motivation that has obviously helped persuade his bank manager to come up with the necessary loan! The very limited production Clos du Tremblay (6,800 bottles) is one of the most sought-after wines of the appellation and sells out at the blink of an eye lid! From 2 hectares of 70-100 year old vines, grown in a sector of les Burdelines which has more clay in the soil, this is a meticulously made wine with the potential to age for over ten years and warrants patience. Again, no oak barrel ageing is used here, simply 10 months in old foudres, allowing the richness of the fruit to dominate the wine.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Janin?s 8 hectare domaine was established in the early 1930?s, when Eric Janin?s grandfather bought two hectares of vines in the remarkable terroir of le Tremblay (nowadays, known as les Burdelines). Paul, Eric?s father, added further parcels in the 1960?s, situated in the lieux-dits of Greneriers, Champ du Cour, Perelles and Brusellions. In 2013, the Janins purchased a small old-vine parcel of 60 year-old vines in the high-altitude les Caves lieu-dit. It is this mosaic of different terroirs that make the Janin?s wines so complex and interesting. Eric Janin?s philosophy is to let the ?soil talk through his wines?. Although not certified organic, his work in the vineyards is based on the principle of restoring the soil to its natural balance, allowing the flora and fauna to re-establish itself. Over the past ten years, the soil has been worked by hand and nearly all treatments and fertilisers have been organically based. Eric?s vinifications are traditional, with whole-bunch, open vat fermentation for 12-15 days, with regular pigeages and pump-overs. The very limited production Clos du Tremblay (6,800 bottles) is one of the most sought-after wines of the appellation and sells out at the blink of an eye lid! From 2 hectares of 70-100 year old vines, grown in a sector of les Burdelines which has more clay in the soil, this is a meticulously made wine with the potential to age for over ten years and warrants patience. Again, no oak barrel ageing is used here, simply 10 months in old foudres, allowing the richness of the fruit to dominate the wine.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Janin?s 8 hectare domaine was established in the early 1930?s, when Eric Janin?s grandfather bought two hectares of vines in the remarkable terroir of le Tremblay (nowadays, known as les Burdelines). Paul, Eric?s father, added further parcels in the 1960?s, situated in the lieux-dits of Greneriers, Champ du Cour, Perelles and Brusellions. In 2013, the Janins purchased a small old-vine parcel of 60 year-old vines in the high-altitude les Caves lieu-dit. It is this mosaic of different terroirs that make the Janin?s wines so complex and interesting. Eric Janin?s philosophy is to let the ?soil talk through his wines?. Although not certified organic, his work in the vineyards is based on the principle of restoring the soil to its natural balance, allowing the flora and fauna to re-establish itself. Over the past ten years, the soil has been worked by hand and nearly all treatments and fertilisers have been organically based. Eric?s vinifications are traditional, with whole-bunch, open vat fermentation for 12-15 days, with regular pigeages and pump-overs.
