Fifth generation vignerons, Laurent and Martine Perrachon, have recently been joined by their sons, Maxime and Adrien. The former is very much concerned with viticulture whilst Adrien is to be found in the cellars and involved in the wine making side of the business. This is an important 30-hectare estate, situated in the la Bottière lieu-dit in Juliénas. Currently, the Perrachon’s are working towards 100% lutte-raisonnée (sustainable viticulture) and only mechanically working their soils, removing any need for weed-killers. This is a domaine that is very much on the up and in 2018, they received one of the few, highly coveted Coup de Coeurs’ awarded by La Revue de Vin de France. It's good news for its drinkers as the 2016 is wonderfully balanced, reflecting the freshness and purity of fruit of this ‘classic’ Beaujolais vintage. The yield ended up at 32hl.\/ha.; the norm for the Brouilly AOP being 52hl.\/ha.\n\u003cp\u003eOwned by the Brac de la Perriere family, this is Chris Piper’s ‘base camp’ in Beaujolais and where he continues the tradition of making his “Chairman’s Plonk”, something that Chris started at Château des Tours, in 1976.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOriginally established in 1631 by Antoine Brac, this three hectares vineyard is perfectly situated at the foot of the Côte de Brouilly. The vines are cultivated using certified organic (Ecocert) methods; there is minimal intervention in the cuvage (winery), allowing the exceptional terroir to show through.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWine making is traditional, with partial de-stemming (30%) in temperature-controlled concrete vats. This is a domaine that is very much on the up and in 2018, they received one of the few, highly coveted Coup de Coeurs’ awarded by La Revue de Vin de France. Fifth generation vignerons, Laurent and Martine Perrachon, have recently been joined by their sons, Maxime and Adrien. The former is very much concerned with viticulture whilst Adrien is to be found in the cellars and involved in the wine making side of the business. This is an important 30-hectare estate, situated in the la Bottière lieu-dit in Juliénas. Currently, the Perrachon’s are working towards 100% lutte-raisonnée (sustainable viticulture) and only mechanically working their soils, removing any need for weed-killers. This wine is from a small parcel of 28 acres, on a very rocky soil, on the most northern part of the Saint Amour appellation, overlooking the village of Saint-Véran. This is a sensual and delicate wine with a great personality. Fifth generation vignerons, Laurent and Martine Perrachon, have recently been joined by their sons, Maxime and Adrien. The former is very much concerned with viticulture whilst Adrien is to be found in the cellars and involved in the wine making side of the business. This is an important 30-hectare estate, situated in the la Bottière lieu-dit in Juliénas. Currently, the Perrachon’s are working towards 100% lutte-raisonnée (sustainable viticulture) and only mechanically working their soils, removing any need for weed-killers. This is a domaine that is very much on the up and in 2018, they received one of the few, highly coveted Coup de Coeurs’ awarded by La Revue de Vin de France. Fernand Verpoix, one of the legends of Fleurie and Beaujolais, passed away last week at the age of 83. Fernand was one of the first independent Beaujolais growers to join the CPW 'team' in 1991 and was, without doubt, one of the most adored by us all. He epitomised the older generation in Beaujolais, where an impish sense of humour and sheer hard work came together to produce amazing Fleuries from his Clos de la Chapelle vineyard. Utterly modest and always meticulous in his wine-making, Fernand also loved a good time. We last lunched together at the \"Au Bon Cru\" and it was our usual get-together: a pastis 51 and a bottle of Fleurie (always someone else's) and a 'déjeuner campagnard'. He was regularly disappointed that I turned down a marc (as a disgestif) but understood - as he was never pushy. We gossiped, talked about Beaujolais in the 1970's and most importantly, its future. Recently, talking to some other friends in the village of Fleurie, they marvelled how, at the age of 82, he was out on his tractor in the vines, always working away. Someone said they saw him going to get his baguette and paper in the village just before Christmas and he didn't look at his best. I guess we all have to accept that time runs out but it's terribly sad when it does. Our sincere condolences to his wife, Andrée and his two children Christian and Nathalie. Fernand Verpoix, one of the legends of Fleurie and Beaujolais, passed away last week at the age of 83. Fernand was one of the first independent Beaujolais growers to join the CPW 'team' in 1991 and was, without doubt, one of the most adored by us all. He epitomised the older generation in Beaujolais, where an impish sense of humour and sheer hard work came together to produce amazing Fleuries from his Clos de la Chapelle vineyard. Utterly modest and always meticulous in his wine-making, Fernand also loved a good time. We last lunched together at the \"Au Bon Cru\" and it was our usual get-together: a pastis 51 and a bottle of Fleurie (always someone else's) and a 'déjeuner campagnard'. He was regularly disappointed that I turned down a marc (as a disgestif) but understood - as he was never pushy. We gossiped, talked about Beaujolais in the 1970's and most importantly, its future. Recently, talking to some other friends in the village of Fleurie, they marvelled how, at the age of 82, he was out on his tractor in the vines, always working away. Someone said they saw him going to get his baguette and paper in the village just before Christmas and he didn't look at his best. Fifth generation vignerons, Laurent and Martine Perrachon, have recently been joined by their sons, Maxime and Adrien. The former is very much concerned with viticulture whilst Adrien is to be found in the cellars and involved in the wine making side of the business. This is an important 30-hectare estate, situated in the la Bottière lieu-dit in Juliénas. Currently, the Perrachon’s are working towards 100% lutte-raisonnée (sustainable viticulture) and only mechanically working their soils, removing any need for weed-killers. Fifth generation vignerons, Laurent and Martine Perrachon, have recently been joined by their sons, Maxime and Adrien. The former is very much concerned with viticulture whilst Adrien is to be found in the cellars and involved in the wine making side of the business. This is an important 30-hectare estate, situated in the la Bottière lieu-dit in Juliénas. Currently, the Perrachon’s are working towards 100% lutte-raisonnée (sustainable viticulture) and only mechanically working their soils, removing any need for weed-killers. From a Beaujolais family, who have grown grapes in the Pierres Dorees for over a century, Paul-Henri and his brother, Charles, created the domaine, out of nothing, in 2008. They started out with 2.30 ha. in the Blemonts lieu-dit and then, in 2009, added a further couple of hectares (in metayage) at Chateau des Boccards, situated on the more granitic soils of Les Deschamps. Conversely, les Blemonts, (where les Carrieres is sourced) has a terroir that has a high level of schist, with veins of quartz and manganese. The 45 year-old vines are planted on a south-facing slope in an old quarry (carriere) and have been certified organic since 2007. Paul-Henri uses biodynamic treatments on his vines and ploughs using a Trait Comtois (a traditional plough-horse) thereby avoiding soil compaction through the use of tractors and also improving the soils aeration.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePaul-Henri has gradually been building himself a reputation as being somewhat of an iconic wine-maker and grower amongst the new dynamic younger generation, who are helping to reinvigorate the Beaujolais region. At the end of 2012, he and Charles bought the run down buildings of the once famous Domaine de Chassignol, situated in les Brureaux, along with five hectares of stunning vineyards on the vertiginous hillsides behind the property. Although needing some restoration, these are some of the best-sited vineyards in the Chenas appellation. This is a man on a mission, with a passion and motivation that has obviously helped persuade his bank manager to come up with the necessary loan! The two brothers have now also renovated the old cellars and cuvage.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVinification leans towards the Burgundian style, with 100% de-stemming and a long, low-extractive fermentation which results in racy, taught and precise wines with intense fruitiness and nano-tannins. Paul-Henri keeps life in his cellar as simple as possible, allowing his wines to evolve as naturally as possible. He uses almost no sulphites, just a tiny little dose prior to bottling. Elevage is in old concrete vats and les Carrieres is bottled non-filtered, normally just after Easter following the harvest. It is a wine that can be broached fairly early in its life but can develop well, in good vintages for 3-4 years.
