Wooden Wine Boxes for Sale
RELEASE DATE: Thursday, 16th November
AN ABSOLUTELY CLASSIC AND CLASSY BEAUJOLAIS VINTAGE
2023 was, for a change, a much more measured growing season, with the high-altitude harvest in Vaux, starting on 13th September, a relatively normal start date. The build-up to the harvest saw a couple of weeks of strong sunshine and very hot, dry weather, which helped bring on the phenolic maturity and meant that the fourteen day harvest at Château de Vaux, progressed in a predictable and calm manner.
These are big, rich and deep-coloured wines but with an alluring crunchy freshness, due to the cool nights that we experienced throughout the harvest. Alcohol levels are normal at about 13.2˚C - 13.5˚C but what is so noticeable is the depth of the silky smooth fruitiness, ensuring that these are wines that will give us all a great deal of pleasure during the grey and cold of November.

I am Laura de Vermont, intern at Christopher Piper Wines for 6 weeks. My father, Yannick de Vermont, of Château de Vaux, in Beaujolais, is one of Chris Piper’s principal suppliers. Today, I have decided to describe a typical day of a winemaker, in this case, my father. I know that every day for each winemaker is different but this is my personal vision about the work of my father.
5:30 AM, the alarm clock rings. It is time to get up to go and spray the vineyards. Indeed, the treatments are easier to perform early in the morning before the wind picks up. The winegrower goes to the winery, where he will prepare his tractor for the day's treatments.
From the cabin of your tractor, you can enjoy the sunrise over the hills of Beaujolais. Depending on the surface to be treated, this task can take a whole morning. Once the area to be sprayed is finished, it is now time for the winegrower to get his shears out. During the month of June the vine grows at high speed and it is therefore necessary to cut the small shoots to encourage the blossoming of the vine flower, then later in the summer, the ripening of the grapes.
12 p.m., it’s time to finally take a short break. A nice lunch, a little nap and then off we go again for an afternoon of shearing! The heat makes shearing very tiring and physically demanding. Fortunately, the wine grower can count on some part-time workers who help him to go faster.
Around 4:30 p.m., the winemaker's outdoor day ends. But now it's the office tasks that need to be done. Responding to customers, managing orders… The winegrower is a multitasking person who has a lot to think about in a single day.
6 p.m., arrival of customers at the estate's cellar. This is the time to have your wines tasted, talk about the functioning of the estate, the Beaujolais region. Obviously, the winemaker feels a certain pride when his wines please the customers. It is the work of a whole year that is rewarded.
Once the customers have left, it's time for the winemaker to head home to enjoy his family and friends. However, sometimes, it happens that he has to attend regional meetings concerning different wine topics, a winemaker is a very busy person !

]]>1. Surprisingly our palest rosé selected was the Lopez de Haro Rioja Rosado 2021. Despite its colour this is an intense rosé nose with red fruits to the fore, with hints of banana and some floral notes. The mouthfeel is silky and pleasant, with great balance, resulting in being both simultaneously fresh and fruity. £10.55
2. Secondly the Château de Cavalier Rosé 2021 from the Côtes de Provence. Highly rated by James Suckling, this is an opulent blend of Grenache, Syrah, Rolle, Cinsault, Sémillon, Cabernet-Sauvignon. Lovely citrus and red fruits with spicy aromas and a floral palate with an aromatic finish. Delicious ! £15.80

4. Muga Rosado 2021, another Rioja rosé with perhaps a little more colour than the Lopez, comes in 4th. From one of the oldest and most respected Rioja Bodegas this dry Rosado offers elegance, good weight and a touch of spice from Garnacha, Tempranillo and Viura grapes. £13.80

]]>La Maison Edmond Briottet was established in 1836 and, today, the family still oversees every aspect of the production of their fruit liqueurs. Strict selection of only the best fruit provides the base and, with careful maceration over ten weeks, they manage to achieve a wonderful concentration of fruit and viscosity.
The berries are macerated in a water and alcohol solution for about 10 weeks as it is the best way to extract all flavours from these berries. Consequently, the alcohol-containing juice thus obtained is called infusion. After that, they add French white sugar to obtain a creme.
The colours strike you first. They are like jewels sparkling in the night sky, wonderfully pure and natural with the most fantastic intensity.
Creme de Cassis (Blackcurrant) Makes the fabulous Kir (Royale) or have this luscious blackcurrant liqueur over ice as a digestif.
Creme de Framboise (Raspberry) Plump and juicy raspberry Creme, like summer berries in a glass.

We are delighted to offer one case of 12 bottles of Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou 1998, 2eme Cru Classe, St Julien. The wine has been stored since purchase in our cellars. All the levels are excellent.
Reviews
A supremely elegant, dense purple-colored effort, the 1998 reveals aromas of cassis, black raspberries, minerals, and currants. Precise, well-delineated, and medium to full-bodied, with magnificent purity and understated elegance.
91 Points. RP (4/2001) Wine Advocate
Mid blackish garnet. Lifted nose with quite noticeable acidity. Hint of something floral. Then sweet-cassis palate entry and nice, gentle balance with just the right amount of sweetness. Dry finish with a bit of tannin left, more than in the 1999. Lots of concentration. Balsam on the finish. Just opening out!

CHATEAU DE VAUX, CLOCHEMERLE; THE DE VERMONT FAMILY
This 13-hecatre family-owned and run domaine is situated in the heart of the historic village of Vaux-en-Beaujolais. Vaux is also known as Clochemerle, thanks to the eponymous novel written by Gabriel Chevalier in the 1930’s, which
was entirely based in and around the village of Vaux. As you wind up the steep road from le Perréon, down in the valley below, the cluster of stone-built houses, reflecting the warm, bright sunshine, welcome you into the delightfully unspoilt world of La France Profonde. Everyone knows everyone and there is fierce rivalry with the people of le Perréon in the valley below.
The de Vermont family have been part of this world for five generations and Yannick de Vermont’s great grandfather, Louis de Vermont, began cultivation of the seventeen century château’s vines in the 1920’s. Louis was one of the first growers in the region to bottle his own wines and this dynamism was continued by his son Roger and more recently, Yannick’s father, Jacques. Today, the domaine is run by Yannick, who in his late forties, is gaining a much deserved international reputation for his wonderfully rich, deep-flavoured and beautifully poised wines. Vaux is one of the higher altitude communes in the Beaujolais (360 metres) and this ensures that the wines have an added degree of freshness, so important in the world of climate change and rising temperatures.
YANNICK DE VERMONT and CHRIS PIPER
Yannick de Vermont’s collaboration with Chris Piper started back in 2009 when Yannick joined the team at Château de Grandmont as vineyard manager. For the next five years, they worked together on converting the estate’s vineyards to eco-friendly production and finally achieving organic certification. Yannick come from a post as cellar master at the Hospices de Beaujeu and also a begun a close involvement in his family’s property, Château de Vaux.
In 2014, Yannick decided to return to his family roots and took over the running of the estate from his father, Jacques. A year later, Chris began to act as consultant oenologist and the ‘dream team’ was back in business, only interrupted by the pandemic in 2020. Yannick is a hands-on winemaker, very much open to new ideas but is not against incorporating these with some more traditional concepts. Working with indigenous yeasts, zero or low levels of SO₂, little filtration and naturally low yields, the end results are a collection of exceptional wines which have won numerous awards and commendations in le Guide Hachette, Bourgogne Aujourd’hui, le Point, Concours International du Gamay, The Burgundy Report (Bill Nanson) and Wine Pages (Tom Cannavan). Yannick de Vermont is very much one of the rising stars of the Beaujolais region.
BEAUJOLAIS-VILLAGES “Les Verseaux” 2022 - Château de Vaux
Situated on the south side of the village, the lieu-dit of ‘les Verseaux’ is on a steep, south-facing granitic hillside. The name is likely to come from the fact that ’les Verseaux’ faces towards the river Saône (eaux) and sees many hours of sunshine exposure. The de Vermonts own just under a hectare of 40-50 year-old vines, where yields hover around the 40hl./ha. level. The grapes were hand-harvested and sorted on a table de triage, on arrival in the winery, with 50% being de-stemmed. Fermentation was in traditional cement vats for about ten days and then the grapes were-gently pressed and left to finish their malolactic fermentation. Bottling took place in March, 2023.
The 2022 vintage in the Beaujolais region was exceptional and in quality and this class act reflects this, with its rich, intense blackberry fruit, with notes of pepper and peony on the bouquet. A Beaujolais-Villages in name but really a ‘cru’ Beaujolais in nature and stature.
BEAUJOLAIS-VILLAGES “Le Clos du Valentin” 2020 - Château de Vaux
Named after Yannick and Sandrine de Vermont’s son, the Clos de Valentin is situated on a vertiginous schist-infused slope behind the family’s house; the vines are 75 years’ old, pruned in the classic gobelet format, giving a tiny yield of perfectly mature deep-coloured grapes. 85% destemmed and only a micro-dose of sulphur used at the time of bottling, the bouquet explodes with aromas of cherries, sweet blackberries, spice and rose petals. Very much a full-bodied style with great amplitude and succulence, the tannins are gossamer-fine and there is an unmistakable core of juicy fruit.
Like the more recent 2022 vintage, 2020 was another solar year in the region, resulting in wines with an opulent texture and a dark fruit profile. The quality of the grapes harvested was outstanding and the low yields saw some very deeply coloured wines. They are fruit-driven wines but with the concentration and balance to age.
BEAUJOLAIS-VILLAGES “Le Rosé” 2022 - Château de Vaux
Following on many years of research, Chris Piper and Yannick de Vermont are particularly happy with the 2022 Rosé with its fresh, pale salmon-pink colour, aromatics of spring flowers and ripe red berries and crisp, lifted strawberry fruit on the palate which lingers for a long time. Perfect summertime drinking made from the Gamay grape.

]]>What Is Barolo?
Barolo is a type of Italian red wine made from Nebbiolo grapes grown in the northwest region of Italy known as Piedmont. It is known for its full body and high tannin content that give it a strong but pleasant taste. The flavor profile can vary depending on where it was grown, with some regions producing wines with more fruit notes while others have an earthier or spicier taste.
The Aging Process
Barolo is aged for at least three years before being released—two years in oak barrels and one year in the bottle. To be labeled as “Riserva,” though, it must be aged for four years—three in oak barrels and one in the bottle. This aging process gives Barolo its signature depth and complexity that makes it so popular among red wine aficionados around the world.
Pairing Options
Barolo pairs nicely with various dishes thanks to its robust flavor profile. It is often served as an accompaniment to cheese platters, roasted meats, mushrooms, truffles, and other rich flavors that can stand up to its boldness. With its high tannin content, it can also bring out subtle nuances in dishes like game meats or even steak tartare that would otherwise be missed if served with another type of red wine.
Whether you're new to red wines or are looking for something unique to try, Barolo should definitely be on your list and you'll definitely want to try our Barolo San Carolo 2016 from Dezzani. Or top quality Barolo Ascheri 2017 Reverdito or equally Barolo Monfalleto 2017 from Cordero di Montezemolo Estate. To see all these wines click HERE
]]>The Basics of Wine Pairing
When it comes to pairing food and wine, there are no hard and fast rules. However, there are some basic principles that can help you choose the right wine for your meal. The most important thing to consider is whether you want the flavors of the food or the flavors of the wine to be dominant in your pairing. Generally speaking, lighter wines pair well with lighter foods while fuller-bodied wines go best with heartier dishes.
Lamb and Pinot Noir
So why is lamb such a great match for Pinot Noir? Lamb is one of those dishes that has enough complexity to stand up to a heavier red without overpowering it. The sweetness from the fat in the lamb helps bring out subtle fruity notes in many Pinots which complements its slightly gamey flavor nicely. As a great example the Pinot Noir Reserva 2020 from Casas del Bosque in Chile is a very fruity Pinot with black cherry and strawberry flavours and since lamb can be quite fatty, it pairs perfectly with lovely acidity that cuts through richness well to keep things balanced.
If you’re looking for something extra special for your Easter feast this year, look no further than the Aloxe Corton 'les Chaillots' 2019 from Domaine Durand, a wonderfully pure Pinot Noir from the heart of Burgundy. Not only will it make your meal extra delicious but it will also give you an opportunity to appreciate how different flavors can work together perfectly when done right.
So this Easter season don't settle for just any old bottle - take some time instead to find that perfect combination that will make your holiday meal truly unforgettable!

]]>St Margaret’s Hospice Care has been at the heart of the community for more than 40 years, providing compassionate and specialist care for local people in their final days, weeks and months. They all know that once someone has received an end of life diagnosis, no-one can change the end of that story. But through hospice care, what they can do that is positive and practical is something that no acute clinical setting can: They can take the time to get to know our patients and their loved ones; they can take the time to listen to them and hear what’s important to them as they approach the end of their life. And they can take the time to care – tailoring the support they provide to help patients live as well as they can for as long as possible. They can do this because they have a higher ratio of staff to patients than any other healthcare setting. That’s thanks to the support of local businesses and our community – every time an individual, group, school or local business chooses to support the hospice, it directly impacts on the lives of people who are facing a life shortening illness.
Our 'Atlantic Meets the Med' Charity Case (arriving on the website next week) will include a £10 donation to St Margaret's and of course Free Delivery (Mainland GB).

Churchill’s are a family-run port and Douro wine producer based in Vila Nova da Gaia and the Douro Valley. Johnny Graham founded Churchill's in 1981, when he was just 29 years old, to bring a personal, drier style and a fresh vibe to the traditional world of port. Christopher Piper Wines started buying their range of world-class vintage, ruby and wood aged ports in 1992, following our purchase of their first importers, David Baillie Vintners of Exeter. For the past thirty years, Churchill’s have been our principal supplier of ports which we distribute to the UK on-trade, the private market and traditional institutional buyers.
CHURCHILL’S TODAY
Johnny still makes the wine and runs the company today, with help from the next generation of his family; who are now the last remaining independent British port house. Churchill’s offices are in the ancient trading post of Vila Nova da Gaia, but their home is the majestic Quinta da Gricha, a 50 hectare Grade-A vineyard, located on the south bank of the Douro river in the famous “Cima Corgo” sub-region of the Douro Valley. Quinta da Gricha possesses an outstanding Douro terroir; named after the natural spring (gricha) that feeds the north-facing vineyards, the quinta sits in a microclimate at 150 to 400 meters above sea level, with a wind exposure that naturally regulates humidity. Once the site of ancient tin mines, the Gricha soil retains a graphite and mineral quality. The oldest vines are more than 80 years old and yield diverse grape varieties which in turn produce wines of structure and complexity.
All Churchill's ports are hand picked, twice sorted, and crushed by foot in the ancient treading tanks at Quinta da Gricha. Foot-treading achieves a gentle but thorough maceration of the grapes and skins without damaging the pips and thereby extracts the necessary colour and tannins whilst still preserving the fresh, natural grape aromas and flavours. From the start, Johnny Graham knew what style of port he wanted to create, which are drier in style with a firm grip. This comes from sourcing exclusively Grade A grapes of native grape varietals, from the best vineyards in the Douro. Very important is that Churchill’s only use native yeasts during fermentation, slowing the process down and allowing an additional 12-24 hours compared to the industry-standard, to convert higher amounts of sugar into alcohol. The result is more natural wine alcohol, lower levels of brandy, and the signature dry style.
All grapes that come through the winery are treated as equals, as if they are all going to end up in vintage port; all therefore, undergo foot treading and extended fermentation. It's not until the ports make the trip to Porto from the Douro, six months after the harvest, that initial blending begins. Johnny Graham and head winemaker, Ricardo Pinto Nunes, continue to blend by taste, until they are happy with each port wines final positioning in the hierarchy.
VINTAGE PORT 2020 (current vintage release)
As is nearly always the case, the 2020 vintage is a field blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão. Produced from old vines (50 year-average) from the Cima Cogo and Douro Superior sub-regions. Made in traditional lagares (treading tanks), the ports rested in seasoned oak vats, over the winter, in the Douro. Following this, they are transported to the Churchill lodges in Vila Nova da Gaia, where they are aged for a further 18 months, prior to bottling.
“This is a big, ripe year where the natural acidity of Quinta da Gricha plays an important role in the Vintage blend. With a powerful ox-blood colour, this muscular Port has a fresh vein of tannin that enhances its fruity aroma, bringing vibrancy to its rich, jammy palate and ensuring a balanced and elegant finish. This is a concentrated but fresh Vintage Port with an intrinsic quality to age beautifully in bottle for several decades.” - Johnny Graham, 2022.
DRY WHITE PORT
VIBRANT - ORANGE BLOSSOM – SMOOTH
Widely regarded as an iconic white port with its distinctive golden colour and smooth nutty flavours that are a result of skin fermentation, followed by a careful maturation process. Aromas of grated nutmeg and hints of orange peel. No further bottle ageing required and serve chilled between 8˚-10˚C.
CRUSTED PORT - bottled 2014
COMPLEX - SMOOTH - COFFEE
Churchill’s are one of the few houses to make Crusted ports, offering an aged vintage experience at a younger age. A blend of wines of vintage quality, from 2 consecutive years, aged in oak casks for 6 months, to ensure a sediment (crust) is thrown; then bottle unfiltered. Greater complexity comes with long bottle ageing. Serve and treat like vintage port.
RESERVE PORT
RICH - WILD BERRY - EXPRESSIVE
This is Churchill’s signature house blend, produced from the same vineyards from where the vintage is sourced. Matured in seasoned oak vats for 3 years, its is rich, complex and unusually fruity , with distinc-tive wild berry aromas. Vibrant and expressive with balancing natural acidity and balance. Best served at cellar temperature, with chocolate desserts or soft cheese.
10 YEAR-OLD TAWNY PORT
VIBRANT - FRUITY - FRESH
Sourced from old vine, Grade-A vineyards, in the Cima Corgo and Douro Superior zones. Vinified in traditional stone lagares, it is aged for an average of ten years in oak casks and then blended to the Churchill’s house style before bottling. This tawny is a true expression of the art of blending, combining experience, time and wood, to find a balance of freshness and a complex backdrop of coffee and dried fruit.
LATE BOTTLED VINTAGE PORT 2017 (Unfiltered)
ELEGANT - VELVET - DARK FRUIT
Sourced from the best selections of Churchill’s Grade-A Douro vineyards each harvest, this is a LBV with real pedigree and ageing potential to match. Matured in large oak vats for 4 years, which is where the port softens, shedding its tannins but without losing its full-bodied rich fruit flavours. Its is then bottled unfiltered, to maintain its structure and complexity.
This is an elegant port with intense aromas of black plums and black currants. Great structure with flavours of dark chocolate with hints of black pepper and a velvety, fresh long-lasting finish.

“The rain that spoilt the reds encouraged botrytis to such an extent that this is a truly magnificent, long-term vintage, helped by a greater degree of selection and cellar expertise than ever before. Perhaps the greatest Sauternes vintage in modern times.”
Chateau Coutet 2001 (1er Cru Classé, Barsac ) Bottles and Halves
Robert Parker wrote of this wine:
“One of the great Coutets I have tasted, with amazing definition, extraordinary vibrancy and force, and sweet, thick, juicy flavours of tropical fruits, peach, honeysuckle, and buttered popcorn, this glorious Barsac looks to be set for an incredibly long life.”
It is indeed one of the great Coutets and as such, offers amazing value.
Dourthe Sauternes “Cuvée d’Excéption” 2001
In 2001, Dourthe sourced a few of the best barrels from two ‘mystery’ and very famous Sauternes châteaux, to blend together to make an outstanding “Cuvée d’Excéption”.
Showing fragrant honeysuckle and crème brûlée on the nose, with attractive medium weight in the mouth and very good concentration, this needs a slither of Roquefort or a passion-fruit mousse! The palate exudes lovely honey and sweet ripe peach followed by a delicious and refreshing finish. Brimming with charm, it is perfect for current drinking.

]]>Firstly the Casas del Bosque Pinot Noir is one of Chris Piper's favourite wines, when he's not drinking or making Beaujolais, this is one of his staple 'take-home' wines. Ideal with turkey, soft and unctuous with lovely acidity it really is a delicious, easy drinking elegant red.
Château Vari Monbazillac, consumed with treacle tart and ginger cream just last weekend, is utterly gorgeous. It has a citrus and lime sweetness, a wonderful caramelised orange nose and was a perfect match for the sweetness and spice of the pudding.
Aternum from Talamonti is a full-bodied white with a splash of oak and if you have anything smoked for Christmas - salmon, chicken,... this is a great wine that fully matches up to these flavours. Intensely perfumed and mouth-filling it really does hit the spot.
Our 'Something Different' case includes wines you might not have seen, after all we do have a huge range of wines, but we can honestly say they this case really does live up to all expectations. From Old Vine Carignan to Cretan Vidiano each one is drinking to perfection.
