The recent Budget announced no extra duty increase on alcohol and this has been interpreted as meaning that no increase will occur. Unfortunately, and this has slipped under most people’s radar, there is an ‘alcohol duty escalator’ in force, set up by Alastair Darling in 2008. This increased the cost of alcohol duty by 2% above RPI (retail price index: the most commonly used measure for inflation) for each Budget until 2015. This allows any subsequent Chancellors, in this case George Osbourne, to avoid unpopular newspaper headlines whilst surreptitiously raking in extra money. As a result, we are having to increase our prices (ex VAT) with effect from midnight on Sunday 27th March by:Archive for March, 2011

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011We’d
like to extend a personal thank you to William and Kate for their wedding invitation, however on this happy day we at CPW will be hard at work delivering wines over the countryside (albeit with the radio on), so will be unable to attend.
There’s no stopping us here at CPW. We’ve selected a range of wines and spirits, highly recommended, so you can sit back, enjoy and imagine yourself in the Banqueting Hall (possibly sitting next to the Beckham’s ?) raising a glass to Prince William and his bride. Hurrah !
First choice for aperitif would be a glass of Pol Roger White Foil NV. They have the Royal Warrant after all and it’s the best non-vintage in our opinion. Flying the flag for English wines a sip of English Mayval from Manstree vineyards in the heart of Devon would go deliciously well with a nibble on smoked salmon. Moving to red what could be more romantic and appropriate than a glass of St.Amour from the heartlands of Beaujolais. To follow with pudding (Queen of Puddings ?) a mouthfull of Château d’Yquem. Outrageously expensive but this is the one occasion that it could be brought out from the royal cellars. To cleanse the palate at the end of the banquet I’d recomend a small glass of delicious Poire William.
Hurrah Hurrah Hurrah !
Fraud Alert
Friday, March 18th, 2011Who would have thought a group (or maybe just one person) of fraudsters would target CPW? Over the past 2 weeks we’ve been inundated with phonecalls from French wine producers gaily confirming large orders supposedly received from CPW. Here is a copy of events over the past 10 days and action taken.
As I am know you are aware, Christopher Piper Wines Ltd. is a long-established wine importers and merchants who started in 1979. Over the past week or so, we have been the subject of a fraud operation against us which is based on a number of individuals stealing our corporate identity and placing fake orders on our behalf. The scam that is being operated is generally based on the following method:
1) an e-mail is sent to a French wine producer from Mr. John Earle (the name of our Managing Director) expressing interest in their wines, an example of which, I have copied below.

Managing Director

The fraudsters have created their own web-domaine to look like ours (sales@christopherpiperwines-ltd.co.uk) whereas our real e-mail address is sales@christopherpiperwines.co.uk. They have copied our Registered Company No. and VAT No. which is available on our website but the telephone numbers are nothing to do with us. Certain producers have received faxed orders (see attached PDF) on a mocked-up order form which has been made by using certain banners on our website.
2) By this stage, most French growers are aware that this is a scam and have got directly in touch with us querying the proposed order. We have obviously warned them that it is a blatant fraud and asked them to proceed no further. However, it seems that one or two people have been duped in to going a stage further and have agreed for a collection of the order.
We have taken the following steps so far:
1) Reported the crime to Devon and Cornwall Police and Mr. Earle had an interview with them on Monday. Another specialist police unit at Tottenham in London that has experience of this kind of fraud has also been notified and will be helping our local police.
2) We have contacted various regional inter-professional bodies via growers who have been involved.
3) We have contacted the domaine-owners of the fake site and they are legally obliged to give us the details of the people involved by this Friday.
We have done our utmost to send out a more general warning throughout the French wine trade but any help is clearly appreciated. . We are obviously concerned that our own good standing and reputation is not impeached by this fraud. If anyone has direct contact with the French Export Guarantee Agency or COFACE please warn them about this fraud.

Christopher Piper Wines scoops National Industry Awards in London
Tuesday, March 1st, 2011Press
Release: Friday, 25th February, 2011
Leading south-west wine retailer and wholesaler scoops two prestigious awards at the UK’s top independent wine merchant awards in London, it was announced today.
Christopher Piper Wines of Ottery St. Mary was the only south-west company to secure no less than four shortlistings at the inaugural Top Merchant Awards which were organised by influential trade publication, Harpers Wine and Spirit, and took place on Wednesday, 23rd February at Vinopolis in London.
The wine specialist went head-to-head with many of the UK’s leading independent merchants and bid to impress a panel of international judges in the ‘Best Buying Team’, ‘Best Wholesaler’, ‘Best Employer’ and ‘Best Digital Strategy’ categories. The organisers of the competition said the new awards initiative was introduced to recognise the most outstanding independent merchants in the UK that demonstrate excellence in key trading disciplines.
On Wednesday evening, the top award for ‘Best Buying Team’ went to Christopher Piper Wines, with the judges commenting on the exceptional range and quality of the Ottery St. Mary firm’s wine list, emphasising the innovative style of the four-strong buying team and the great value that their selection offers at all levels. Also, in a closely fought competition, Christopher Piper Wines won the award for ‘Best Digital Strategy’ for their impressive website at www.christopherpiperwines.co.uk. The site, which has been created with the help of local south-west firm, Bitpod, was regarded as being the most user-friendly, in-depth and up-to-date wine merchant’s website. The up-to-the minute input, steered by in-house web-girl, Fiona Taylor, is widely regarded as setting a new industry standard.
Christopher Piper Wines’ Managing Director, John Earle, said:
“In recent years we have been fortunate to earn the recognition from some of the most influential and highly-regarded wine experts and, while each achievement is important to us, gaining respect from our peers and industry colleagues brings a special sense of reward.”
“From first opening our doors, more than 30 years ago, we’ve worked to a simple philosophy – sourcing and selling the finest wines available at fair prices. We take great effort and pride to ensure that our customers can access services and products that are on a par with the very best locally and internationally. Awards like this are further evidence that we are achieving our goals.”
