RUM

RUM

Many wine and spirit publications are predicting that rum will be the new 'gin'. Currently a star performer for those 'in the know', we would say get in first and be part of the new trend, before it starts in earnest.

Doorleys Barbados White Rum

Doorleys Barbados White Rum This is the most refreshing, fruity, aromatic white rum - blends well to make some of the worlds finest cocktails.

Martin Doorly was the founder of the company back in the early 1920’s when he created many new rums some of which were named after the owner. In 1992 the House of Martin Doorly was acquired by RL Seale and today, the excellence and history continues at the Foursquare Plantation and Distillery. In 1995 and 1996 the distillery was completely restored by taking the existing historic structures and combining them with modern technology. Today, the facility is the showplace distillery of the island. Additionally, it is 100% environmentally green.

Diplomatico Reserva Rare Venezuelan Rum

Diplomatico Reserva Rare Venezuelan RumAlmost unheralded in the UK (possibly because we focus on rums from the ex-colonies), Venezuela is renowned in the Caribbean for the 'seriousness' and quality of its rums. They are lighter and more subtle than the Jamaican rums but still can still take long ageing in oak barrels and deliver a big hit of flavour on the palate. The Venezuelan rums tend towards complex sugar cane, honey and peppery cinammon (delicious!) flavours rather than molasses but it varies widely from distillery to distillery.

From the distillery's website:
Diplomático Reserva is an extraordinary blend of rums aged for up to eight years. It is a great balance of complex pot still rums and light column still rums, with all the pot still rums being distilled from sugar cane honeys. This rum is the ideal ingredient for sophisticated cocktails like Mai Tai, Mulata, Presidente. It can also be enjoyed neat or on the rocks.
Colour: dark golden.
Nose: plum, oak, nuts and vanilla aromas stand out.
Mouth: clear traces of dried fruit, wood and vanilla giving this rum an extraordinary balance and a long lasting finish.

Smith & Cross Traditional Jamaican Rum

Smith & Cross Traditional Jamaican RumThe sugar trade was a cornerstone of the British Empire and in 1802 London's West India Docks, were built solely to process the vast amounts of sugar and rum arriving from British colonies, particularly Jamaica. For generations, England was Jamaica's best market for rum and for this reason the world went to London to source the finest products.

With its roots going back to 1788, Smith & Cross and its partners became prominent handlers of Jamaica rum, with extensive cellars along the banks of The River Thames. Throughout the 19th century and into the early 20th century, Jamaica Rum became revered for its deep, full flavours and pleasing aromas. This rum represents the distinctively flavourful and aromatic style that made Jamaican rum famous.

It's attractive golden colour, its tones of toffee and burnt sugar on the nose exemplify the best qualitites of this increasingly popular type of rum. The palate is light and clean and it is ideal for enjoying with ice and your favourite mixer, or as part of an exciting cocktail.

2004 Barbados Four Square Rum

2004 Barbados Four Square Rum Tucked away in the southern countryside of Barbados, on 8 acres of a former sugar plantation, is the magnificent Foursquare Rum Distillery and Heritage Park. This working rum factory is best known for its collection of spiced rums but it produces a wide range of rums including the highly favoured Doorly's, Rum 66, E.S.A.Field and Tommy Bahama.

Foursquare Distillery is owned by the Seale family who have five generations of rum-making expertise dating back to 1820. The family itself can trace its roots on the island back to the 1650s. Being wholly family owned means we are free to pursue a perfectionist agenda compared to most Caribbean rum distilleries which are beholden to the major spirit companies. We invest more time and more money than other distilleries because we believe it makes a difference to the taste.

New Dawn 18 Year Old Dominican Republic Rum

New Dawn 18 Year Old Dominican Republic RumAged Dominican Republic rum

Blended with Cornish spring water

Matured in American oak barrels, this 18 year old solera rum started its journey in the hills of Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic, where it was specially crafted for us by master blenders at Oliver and Oliver. Once selected, its journey continued across the Atlantic aboard the handsome engineless brigantine Tres Hombres, aged a further 45 days on the rolling sea. Met by horse and cart on arrival in Falmouth, England, the barrels made their final journey to be blended with Cornish spring water and bottled in a local brewery.

A smooth sipping rum, hot butter, tropical fruits, pepper spice, cocoa, sea air and oak.
