Regional View
Alsace is a French region with an international culture and world class wines. Vines growing in the warm, dry climate of the hillsides of Alsace produce seven types of wines: Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Tokay Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Muscat, Sylvaner, and Gewürztraminer. There are a few who have also produced red wines from Pinot Noir and these are becoming finer and more complex over time.
We currently stock wines from Domaine Henri Fuchs and Domaine Bruno Sorg. Established in 1922, the Fuchs family estate was one of the first to start bottling their own wines in 1945. Their vineyards are mainly situated in excellent sites throughout the commune of Ribeauvillé, with a further 20% to be found in the neighbouring communes of Hunawihr and Bergheim.
The Fuchs use no weed-killers or man-made fertilisers on their vineyards which goes a long way to restricting yields, but they also prune very tightly so that their final rendement (yield) is at least 20% below the village average. In the winery, Henry avoids the use of pumps, preferring to rely on gravity to move his wine around, thereby reducing its contact with air. Sulphur Dioxide is avoided during the fermentation and is only added in minimal quantities following racking and filtration.
The overall effect of all this are wines of great freshness and character with excellent keeping potential and they are not normally released until they are showing at their best and ready for drinking.
Domaine Bruno Sorg are based in Eguisheim, south of Colmar, and was established in 1970. Bruno's son, François now runs the estate, and believes wines are made in the vineyard and that the wine-maker has a duty to work with nature. Yields are kept low and the Sorg style is definitely one of rich fruit, residual sugar and finesse. He has 10 hectares of wonderfully situated vines, half of them in grand crus. Old vines and sandstone soil give great concentration and flavour. .................................................................................................................................
Riesling Equinoxe, Domaine Henri Fuchs
Outstanding clean and spicy floral nose with a hint of cordite. Extremely concentrated on the palate, however it still has a lot of freshness and light 'mouthfeel', bursting with elegant lime fruit. Very complex, organic, character, some tropical notes, superb finesse and sophistication and with fantastic length.
Remarkable acidity make this wine exceptionally well-balanced. With time,it also develops the very specific "gunflint" aroma. This is a full-bodied wine which can be kept for at least 12 years.
