Canada has been on the fringe in terms of wine for many years but it is definitely 'coming of age' now that it has declared eleven sub-appellations of the Niagara region. This region stretches from Lake Ontario to the Niagara Escarpment covering about the same amount of land as the Napa Valley. The sub appellations have been determined by the different micro climates, soil types and topography of individual vineyards and it should not be too long down the line before we see them shown proudly on the labels.
