With nearly 300 producers making a wide range of wines, this is a Latin American country to watch. With the majority of the vineyards situated in the hills in the southern part of the country where the Atlantic gives off a temperate climate, producers like Castel Pujol are in a strong position to penetrate world markets.
The first few hectares of Pizzorno's land were bought in 1890 by Don Polonio, an immigrant from the Canary Islands who thought that the Canelón Chico area would be outstanding for vines. His son Francisco built the first winery in 1910 and his grandson set about revitalising the estate in 1996. Carlos A Pizzorno is the fourth generation of the family to make wine at this 15 hectare estate, 20 kilometers to the north of Montevideo
