Amapola, which means "poppy" in Spanish, is made by René Barbier, who are well known for producing quality wines. Their aim is to produce a fresh, fruity, and easy-to-drink wine, which can accompany most dishes or be drunk on its own.
Penedés is situated in the North East of Spain, South East of Barcelona. It has a Mediterranean climate and limestone, clay, sandy soils. Ideal for the cultivation of the vine.
The family Torres effectively dominate the wine scene in the Penedes region of Catalonia in North Eastern Spain, not far from Barcelona. They have been growing grapes there since the 17th century and have planted a wide range of both traditional and 'international' varieties on the 900 hectares (2,200 acres) of vineyard that they own. The fortunes of the company took off in earnest when the current Miguel Torres studied winemaking in Burgundy in the 1950's. From that point, experiments with non-Spanish varieties and substantial investment in technology led to a whole new range of wines that culminated with the Gran Coronas black label beating all the top red Bordeaux at a blind tasting in France. The family also now has substantial interests in winemaking in both Chile and California.
