New Zealand - South Island

St Clair Estate - BLENHEIM

Their first wines were only produced in 1994, but Saint Clair Estate Wine's reputation as one of New Zealand's leading wine companies with an exceptional quality record is growing fast. The Saint Clair name originates from the vineyard property, first settled by the Sinclair family. Pioneer James Sinclair built one of the first homes in Blenheim and was closely associated with the early development of the town. Over time the name of the property reverted to the original Saint Clair. Saint Clair Estate Wines is owned by Neal and Judy Ibbotson, viticulture pioneers in Marlborough since 1978. Grapes were originally supplied to local wine companies; however a desire to extend the quality achieved in the vineyard through to the finished wine led to the establishment of Saint Clair Estate Wines. From 1994 when wines from the first vintage all won medals including gold, the name Saint Clair has been synonymous with quality and its award-winning record continues today. International accolades include the coveted trophy for Best New Zealand Wine Producer of the Year at the International Wine and Spirit Competition 2005. Saint Clair Estate Wines also has the distinction of being the first New Zealand wine company to win major international trophies for Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir in the same year. Saint Clair Estate Wine's success is founded on the 27 years of extensive pioneering viticulture, ongoing as a critical part of the highest quality winemaking practices. Neal and Judy's passion for their Marlborough vineyards and award-winning range of wines is continuing to build their growing reputation in New Zealand and in the 35 markets around the world that they export to. The company's mission is to create world-class wines that exceed their customers every expectation. To achieve this, Neal Ibbotson's viticulture expertise and Marlborough's unique climate and soils, are both combined with the proven experience of one of New Zealand's leading winemaking teams, led by Saint Clair's chief winemaker, Matt Thomson. Today the company is something of a family business with the next generation also involved. Son Tony looks after the graphic design and daughters Sarina and Julie both promote Saint Clair Estate Wines in sales and marketing.

Jackson Estate, BLENHEIM, MARLBOROUGH

John Stichbury has been growing grapes on his 36-hectare estate since 1988, which he planted on freely draining, flat alluvial soil which is ideal for viticulture. Until the beginning of the 1990's, 'Stich' sold his grapes to major New Zealand wineries but he decided to rent space at the Rapaura Winery and, from then on, became a major force in the New Zealand wine industry. With the help of viticulturist, Richard Bowling, and the trend-setting Australian wine-maker, Martin Shaw, Jackson Estate is making some of the most exciting wines to come out of South Island. The 2003 Sauvignon Blanc has superb concentration and vibrancy with an intense gooseberry and currant-leaf nose and flavours of pineapple, melon and spicy lychee. It is a perfectly proportioned wine with a fine fuse of crisp acidity. The partially barrel-fermented Chardonnay is a super-ripe, complex mix of citrus and nutty white-peach fruit flavours, wrapped in discreet vanilla oak. The delicious Marlborough Riesling shows the potential of this variety in this region, with its cool, sunny summers and long ripening season. It is crammed full of ripe, passion-fruit-like flavours and a rounded, crisp finish. The Pinot Noir is a sensational wine as 'Stich's' carefully selected clones have produced a mouth-filling, deep-coloured, richly textured seductress of a wine. It exudes sweet black cherry and blackberry fruit with a discreet 'touche' of vanilla, coming from the new oak that a proportion of this wine is aged in before bottling.

Hunter's Wines, BLENHEIM, MARLBOROUGH

Established by Ernie and Jane Hunter in 1983, Hunter's is a name that has become synonymous with the very best quality in New Zealand white wines. Until his tragic death in a car accident in 1987, Ernie Hunter had propelled his estate into the limelight around the world. His wife, Jane, then took over his mantle and carried on where her late husband had left off. As a qualified viticulturist, she is in charge of the vineyard, whilst her wine-maker, Gary Duke, who joined the team in 1991, has worked wonders in the winery with the help of Australian consultant, Tony Jordan. The 2003 Sauvignon Blanc is wonderfully aromatic and fresh, with a lively melon/lime fruitiness and a racy acidity. The 2001 Chardonnay is a mouth-filling, vibrant wine with a superbly integrated vanilla and citrus fruit flavour. The Hunter's Gewurztraminer is ground-breaking stuff, being fragrant and beautifully balanced with flawless varietal character, its bouquet exuding rose petals and the palate revealing true spicy-fruitiness. Pinot Noir has become something of a speciality of Gary Duke's, the Hunter's example being full and smooth with plenty of ripe cherry and plum fruit.

Spy Valley Vineyard, BLENHEIM, MARLBOROUGH

Situated on the sunny southern side of Marlborough's Wairau Valley are Bryan and Jan Johnson's 130 hectares of vines. The actual name of the valley where the Johnson Estate is located is Waihopai Valley but, due to the presence of a satellite tracking station, the locals have nicknamed it Spy Valley! With Alan McCorkindale making the wines, it is no surprise that the 2003 Sauvignon Blanc is such a success; it has an intense gooseberry and asparagus nose with a hint of nettles and a very long, exotic fruit palate. We have recently added their succulent, juicy and deep-coloured Pinot Noir which has beautiful poise and length.

Nautilus Estate, RENWICK, MARLBOROUGH

Owned by Negociants New Zealand, a subsidiary of S. Smith and Son of Yalumba, Nautilus Estate is a 35-hectare property, situated in Renwick and the Awatere Valley in Marlborough. It sprung to fame in the mid- 1990's when its Sauvignon Blanc won a string of trophies on the international circuit. In 1998, Clive Jones was appointed senior wine-maker and he brought with him an innovative streak and a passion for nature and things ecological. The Nautilus vineyards are managed using an environmentally sustainable régime where no pesticides are used and minimal intervention is the overriding policy. The Sauvignon Blanc is a very clearly defined varietal, made from fruit grown in the Awatere Valley Vineyard which is ideally suited to the Sauvignon grape, with its glacial, marine sedimentary mudstone which devigorates the vines and results in reduced crop levels. The wine is very ripe and full but is under-pinned by a classically zesty and fresh gooseberry character which is so typical of Marlborough. The Chardonnay is made from grapes sourced from vineyards in Renwick, Aitken, Chaytor, Neal and Sutherland. These are all zones with very stony, free-draining soils, giving yields as low as 2.5 tonnes per acre (40hl/ha) which guarantees Chardonnay with a fantastic depth of flavour. 25% of the must is tank-fermented and the rest is vinified in French oak, and matured for a further 10 months. The ensuing wine is very intense with a peaches and fig fruitiness and delicious texture.

Cloudy Bay Wines - MARLBOROUGH

Cloudy Bay Vineyards was established in 1985 by Cape Mentelle, the Western Australian winery, which today is a part of the Moet Hennessy Wine Estates. The company farms 140 hectares of vines at three carefully selected sites. Vineyards planted in 1986 surround the winery in the Wairau Valley at Rapaura, with additional plantings at nearby Renwick and in the Brancott Valley, in the southern foothills. Mount Edward - QUEENSTOWN

For many years, Alan Brady, an Irishman and journalist, worked at one of Central Ortego's best producers of Pinot Noir - Gibbston Valley. His reputation for being a master of Pinot was achieved during the 1980's and, having got to the top, he decided that he needed a new venture thus setting up his on winery at Mount Edward. Mount Edward is a small winery and a very personal project of Alan Brady who has absolute hands-on committment at every stage of his wine's production. It also allows him to put into practice any winemaking ideas he might have and his winery is now one of the top places in New Zealand to buy quality Pinot Noir. There is a drawback though. Production is so small that his wine is serverely rationed!

Extremely elegant wines that have undergone a surprisingly long bottle-ageing process that gives them a roundness not often found at this level.
