Manstree Vineyard, SHILLINGFORD ST. GEORGE, DEVON We may have diabolical summers but, somehow, a few producers in our green and pleasant land manage to make some really quite exciting white wines. Manstree Vineyard, owned by the Boyce family and run by Tim and Simon Boyce (with just a tad of help from their parents, Clive and Susan) is situated 1½ miles from Exeter city boundary and has been producing white wines for the past 20 years. The previous owner, Gerry Symons, planted the vines over a ten year period, between 1979 and 1989, the site having been selected for its excellent drainage and its position in an area known as "Devon's Frying Pan" which has unusually low rainfall. There are five varieties planted on the 4½ acres of vineyard, the principal three being Seyval Blanc, Madeleine Angevine and Siegerebbe. The wines are made by Martin Cursham of Staplecombe and Bob Lindo at Camel Valley Vineyard.
Sharpham Vineyard, TOTNES, DEVON Sharpham Vineyard is owned by the Sharpham Trust and is situated overlooking the River Dart about two miles upstream from Totnes. The vineyards are managed by Ian A'Court and his dedicated team whilst the wine making is in the hands of Mark Sharman and Duncan Schwab. Classic English wines are produced at Sharpham vineyard as a result of a happy marriage of soil, climate and grape variety (terroir), and nature has bestowed her gifts freely upon Sharpham. In the winery, they employ both New World and traditional techniques to best develop their unique regional characteristics. Their tally of International Awards confirms their position as one of England's foremost quality wine producers. Quality, taste and excellence are the enduring hallmarks of their award winning range of English cheeses. Sharpham combine meticulous attention to hygiene with traditional methods including cutting, moulding and turning, all performed entirely by hand. The cheese dairy provides you with the chance to look in on the making areas and follow the process from start to finish. What a really great combination - great wine and fabulous cheese.
