It is widely accepted that Château Barrabaque's Cuvée Prestige is amongst the very best wines of the appellation. This beautiful 9-hectare property stands on a hill, over-looking the Dordogne river and its vineyards are on chalky, limestone soils with the average age of the vines being a little over twenty-five years old. The wine is aged in 50% new oak barriques for 12-14 months where it also undergoes its malo-lactic fermentation, something that is very much the fashion in Bordeaux today.
This estate is owned by James and Monique Grégoire and one of the largest in the Fronsac appellation covering 59 hectares. The consultant oenologist is the ubiquitous Michel Rolland. The soil at Rivière is of an exceptional quality. Entirely located on slopes, the vineyards are a subtle mixture of clay, limestone and sand, particularly favourable to vines. In addition, the slopes are fully south facing, in a kind of natural amphitheatre which concentrates the action of the sun and makes it possible to obtain grapes of perfect ripeness. In addition, the proximity of the Dordogne, which flows within a few meters of the vines, exerts a regulating action on the climate: it does not freeze in winter and the heat of the summer is moderated by water.
