A Taste of Ottery

Ottery St Mary is changing. With the additon of a brilliant fish shop, local fresh greengrocers and a new and exciting charcuterie/restaurant to the already award winning butchers and medal winning wine shop (CPW of course), it has now become a bit of a secret foodie haven. One that we now think should be shared. Come and visit the town (2 hours free parking in Sainsburys, Hind Street), wander round and enjoy the 'Taste of Ottery' - West Country artisan produce at its best.

Rusty PigWelcomed at the door by Robin Rea with a warm cup of coffee we are sure this new and exciting addition to Ottery will do extremely well. Robin, in between working at Rusty Pig is the Senior Chef at River Cottage Farm and amazingly has time to run a small holding near Honiton, rearing his own pigs (Oxford Sandy & Black breed) and growing his own fruit and vegetables.

The idea is to sit at his rustic and friendly table in his shop, have a coffee and peruse the items of pork available. Home made faggots, charcuterie, terrines, patés, belly pork, wild garlic & fennel seed sausages, to mention just a few. All made from his own reared pigs and those from Riverwood Farm (Oxford/Tamworth/Gloucester breeds).

Robin, on Saturdays from 2nd June, will be turning his table into an exclusive dining experience. This will include canapés, a 4 course meal, (charcuterie, fish, pork dish), coffee & petit fours. The focus being on strictly seasonal produce.

Otter ProduceOtter Produce opened its doors almost three months ago and Mike Price who runs this delightful greengrocers is full of enthusiasm for local produce. 'Local first, English next' is his ethos and when looking round his shop you can see this in full effect. Local rhubarb and lettuces line his shelves with Four Elms fruit juices peeping out from behind. Summer fruits will be soon on their way from Fluxton Farm (almost walking distance from the shop) and vegetables from Newton Poppleford.

K&M Butchers

K&M ButchersKevin and Mary Tratt have run a local butchers shop in Ottery for over 10 years. Everything in their shop is Free Range and locally sourced from a 15 mile radius. Beef and Lamb from Ashill, Pork from Orchard Farm near Taunton and Poultry from Creedy Carver in Crediton. Each week they produce over 10 different flavours of sausage from the Free Range Pork. They cook their own gammon and produce other interesting items such as haggis and white pudding.
Hand made chutneys aline the counter using locally sourced produce.

The Old Watch House

The Old Watch HouseRun by Toby Guest and Simon Bennett, The Old Watch House is the most wonderful fish, crab and lobster shop. Two blackboards at the front of the shop give the specials of the day and the boards inside are packed full of different kinds of fish to keep you going over several weeks. A few that I picked out : Locally fresh cooked Beer crabs, Sidmouth Dabbs and Seabass, Lyme Bay Squid, Cornish mussels, Brixham Spratts. Not to mention 'Blinkin Big Prawns' and potted shrimps.
This is a shop where one gets inspired to cook something different and both Toby and Simon are full of ideas and recipes so do ask them for advice.

Open Tuesday - Saturday 9-5pm. Closed Sunday & Monday
Shop also at Lyme Regis and a permanent counter at Millers Farm Shop.

Country Farm, Quality Devon MeatsSteve Bealey has been running this quality butchers in the centre of Ottery for over 22 years. He is very passionate about the source of his meat and keeps everything as local as possible. Beef is from Braxhayes Farm on the outskirts of Ottery where the cows are reared and slaughtered on site keeping them stress-free. Their lamb comes from Whimple, poultry from Arc chicken in Silverton and Pork from the Butterford Estate in Clyst Honiton. As you can see from his picture Steve is a charming, friendly butcher only too happy to help.
