Chardonnay
Chardonnay - 2004 - TW Estate
Ref: A124604
Intense aromas of ripe peach & pineapple, smothered with whipped cream & hints of honey.

Paul and Jenny Tietjens’ vineyard is nestled against the Hexton hills on the north – western outskirts of Gisborne on the East Coast of New Zealand. The 24-hectare vineyard, progressively planted since 1983, has produced top quality wines for half a dozen wine companies. Since the 1989 vintage, it has won 39 national and international medals, including nine golds, plus two trophies – 1997 National Wine Show of Australia and the 1998 Air New Zealand Wine Awards. Planted mainly in chardonnay, the vineyard also has Semillon, merlot, malbec and a small amount of Viognier
and a new planting of Pinot Gris due for first crop 2006.

Located on the country's most easterly tip and closest to the international dateline, Gisborne boasts the world's most easterly vineyards and the first vines to see the sun each day.The region receives high sunshine hours on coastal plains that are sheltered from the west by a range of mountains. Soils include alluvial loams over sandy or volcanic subsoils of moderate fertility. Vineyards are predominantly sited on flats. Chardonnay occupies around half of Gisborne's vineyards and has led Gisborne's grapegrowers and winemakers to christen their region the Chardonnay capital of New Zealand. The balance is planted in mostly white varieties, leaving red grapes a share of only 10%.

The nose has aromas of ripe peach and pineapple with honey and cream. A rich attack of nectarine lengthening through to a lovely rich palate with excellent persistence of tropical fruit.
