Arbois "En Paradis" Vielles Vignes Chardonnay - 2004 - Jean Rijckaert

This is a lovely fresh wine with nutty complexity, gently oaked and full in body but kept fresh by vibrant acidity and minerality.

40 year old vines in the south of the Arbois are grown on a complex soil structure that includes blue marne, clay, limestone and sandstone.

Jean Rijckaert's Arbois Chardonnay is very Burgundian in style (the vineyards are on the same latitude as Chassagne and Puligny which lie about 50km to the west). All the wine is aged in barrel, none of which are new as Jean does not like the minerality of his wines to be masked in any way by overly aggressive oak.

A fresh, bright apple aroma leads to melon, pears and butter on the palate (but no one of them dominating) with a touch of spice and a great crisp, clean, mineral filled length. This is definitely old world Chardonnay.
