Poggio San Pollo
Ref: A107101
Poggio San Pollo, Montalcino
A deeply coloured wine with great intensity of fruit, length and elegance. A great vintage and a great wine.
Poggio San Polo is one of the rising stars in Montalcino. The Fertonani family purchased this wonderful estate in 1998 and it is now run by Silvia Fertonani, helped by her husband, Mario Calzolari, who is highly rated for his skill in the winery. Each vintage sees a great step up in quality.
Although she currently only has five hectares of vineyard, Silvia is planting another ten. Given the position of the vineyards and Silvia's determination to transform Poggio San Polo into one of Montalcino's top estates, we are convinced that this estate will soon join Italy's elite.
The Sangiovese vines are approximately 10 years old and yield about 5 tonnes per hectare and the harvest in 2000 took place in mid October.
The must was macerated on the skins for three weeks and was fermented in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. The malolactic fermentation also took place in stainless steel. The wine was transferred into Allier French oak barrels of varying sizes (225L, 228L, 300L & 500L) and was matured in them for 24 months. Fifty percent of the barrels were new, the remainder being one and two years old. The wine was bottled in June 2003.
Truly a great wine from a great vintage.
