Chianti Rufina Reserva
-
2003
-
Grati
Ref: A106403
Plum and ripe, red cherry fruit is ably supported by a spicy oakiness.
The Grati family has been growing grapes and olives in Rùfina for five generations. The XVI century Villa di Vetrice was built around an old XIII century watchtower.
Traditionally, the Gratis sold their wine in Florence and this continues today although the members of the current generation no longer go to the city in carts drawn by powerful white oxen to deliver straw covered flasks of wine.
Today, they receive their clients in the estate's tasting room. The estate includes the "vinsantaia" - where the sweet, dessert wine, "Vin Santo" is made - the farm buildings and the family's private chapel. The hospitality it offers is as pure and genuine as the bouquet of its wines.
The Chianti Rùfina Docg area stretches amidst Romanesque churches and XI century tower houses, priories and Medieval castles with underground cellars, old fortresses long transformed into comfortable country homes, luxurious XVI century villas and charming hamlets surrounded by cypress trees and olive groves that dot the gentle hills. The vineyards produce a young Chianti that boasts a long tradition: in 1716 the grand duke Cosimo III de'Medici drew the boundaries of this, one of the finest of four wine producing areas in Tuscany, because "only the high hills of Rùfina yield a long-lived, full-bodied and aristocratic wine".
