La Segreta Bianco - 2008
Cantina Planeta

Ref: A101908

Full, dry and minerally with bags of exotic fruit generously bestowed by the Sicilian sun.

Cantina Planeta, more than any other company, has catapulted Sicilian wines into our consciousiness and they are now, rightly, up there with the best of them. Planeta wines win prizes in the same way that AC Milan win matches and they are just as highly repected as well.

The Planeta family started making wine in 1985 on the shore of Lake Arancio near Sambuca di Sicilia. They started by evaluating the vineyards, working out which grapes suited which soil type and were not precious about only using indiginous varieties. Chardonnay and Sauvignon happily rub shoulders with Grecanico and Fiano to form the delicious La Segreta Bianco. They also invested in the latest technology and worked in partnership with the great Piemontese winemaker Carlo Corino.

The 5 varietals (20% Chardonnay; 5% Fiano; 60% Grecanico; 5% Sauvignon; 10% Viognier) are harvested seperately during August and September according to their maturity and ripeness and vinified seperately before the final blending. The grapes are crushed and destemmed before the juice is clarified through cold settling overnight. The juice is then innoculated with selected pure yeast strains and fermentation takes place at 15°C for 12 days in temperature controlled, 200hl stainless steel tanks. The wine is blended, then allowed a resting period in tank before bottling in the first half of the February following vintage.

Vibrant and aromatic with notes of citrus fruits, lychee, pineapple and peach complemented by hints of minerals, herbs and mint. Full and dry, smooth and supple with balancing acidity and a long, minty finish.
