Barbera D'Asti Ceppi Storici
Barbera D'Asti Ceppi Storici - 2005 - Araldica Vini Piemontesi
Ref: A107305
An attractive vibrant damson, curranty character dominates, whilst a subtle, smoky flavour adds interest and soft, oak tannins offer an extra dimension to the texture. A refreshing smack of juicy acidity gives plenty of definition to the ripe fruit.

The fruit was hand harvested from 1st to 5th October only from vines over 40 years old. Fermented in stainless steel tanks at 25-30° C using BDX yeast. Pressed when dry and racked to stainless steel tanks for malolactic fermentation. The clear wine was then racked to a mixture of French oak barrels (50%) and large traditional Piemonte oak vats for 12 months maturation. These two components were then blended and bottled.

One of the most exciting wineries in Europe, Araldica Vini Piemontese is made up of three co-operatives, totalling some 1000 members working 2000 hectares of vineyard. It is not surprising then that they are by far the largest producer of Barbera in Piedmont.

Now, it continues to be fashionable to knock the rôle played by co-operatives which are still a powerful force in Italy, as there are many that have failed to move with the times and still churn out, at best, mediocre, lacklustre wines. But, there are just as many co-ops, like Araldica Vini Piedmontese (a highly successful partnership set up by the Australian, Martin Shaw and the innovative Italian, Claudio Manera), that have set new standards and pioneered new wine making techniques which have resulted in wines that amaze for the sheer quality of their wines. With a little help from maceration carbonique, Araldica has produced a deliciously glugable, gutsy and fruity Barbera of considerable character. Fresh, vibrant fruit is married with a touch of oak that gives the resulting wine an added dimension.
