Barolo Cerretta Piani, Luigi Baudana
Barolo Cerretta Piani, Luigi Baudana - 2001 - Luigi Baudana
Ref: A104401
Luigi and Fiorina Baudana have been cultivating grapes since 1975 from their 4.5 hectares of vineyards situated on two important Crus of Serralunga d’Alba, called, confusingly, Baudana and Cerretta. Nebbiolo grapes for Barolo wine (2 has), Barbera d’Alba (0.5 ha), Dolcetto d’Alba (1 ha), Chardonnay (0.5 ha) and 0.5 ha planted with what they call 'foreign' vines (Sauvignon and Merlot) since 1996 in order to experiment a bit. Some of the Nebbiolo vineyards have been carefully preserved and now they are around 30 years old, while the others have been re-installed between the 1980 and the 1990.

For the Cerretta Piani, the grapes are pressed once the grape stalks have been removed, and the must ferments for about 12 - 15 days, with a temperature between 26 and 28°C. During this phase the must is pumped over the cap two or three times a day, in order to extract colour and tannin. At the end of this procedure the wine goes from vat to small toasted oak barrels (225 and 500 litres) where the malolatic fermentation takes place. After two years spent in the wood, the wine is bottled during August of the third year.

The colour is garnet red with some orange flexes whilst on the nose there is ripe fruit with tones of cocoa and vanilla, typical of the evolution of a Serralungan Barolo. Lots of ripe, peppery fruit on the palate with a firm, fresh tannin that persists. Great length.
