Montepulciano D'Abruzzo - 2006 - Umani Ronchi

Deep coloured with a soft, ripe and supple fruit, and a peppery character.

Widely planted in the Abruzzi and Marches regions of Italy, the Montepulciano grape is arguably of a better quality than the Sangiovese which is dominant in this part of Italy. It is later ripening, and the wines have a lower acidity and lack the assertive tannins of say, the Brunello di Montalcino produced nearby.

The combination of low tannin and ripe fruit accounts for its growing popularity, as it is a wine that is delicious drunk in its youth.

Umani Ronchi's comprehensive range of wines demonstrate the huge potential of Montepulciano. The foundation of the winery in Cupramontana by Dr Gino Umani Ronchi dates back to the 1950’s and today Umani Ronchi own 110 hectars in the Verdicchio Classico area, 60 hectars in the Rosso Conero, and 30 in Abruzzi.

Velvety in texture, with hints of liquorice and chocolate, this is a medium bodied wine that will happily partner most red meat dishes, pastas and antipasti.
