Zinfandel

It has only recently been established that the Zinfandel, made famous in California, is in fact one and the same variety as the Primitivo of Apulia in Italy. As a variety in California it has often been encouraged to over-produce in climates too hot to afford it the longer, cooler ripening period it prefers. It also became ubiquitous in terms of blush rosé production.

Characteristics: As a red wine in the right hands and climate it is capable of achieving wonderfully intense reds full of brambly fruit with rich almost peppery character. Rich, round, ripe sometimes spicy. As a blush rosé the wine is usually medium, light and fruity.
