Verdicchio

Widely planted in central Italy, Verdicchio's name refers to its yellowish-green skin colour. It's a vigourous vine but suffers from very variable yields which put many off from growing it so it is seen less and less away from the Marche region. The wines it produces tend towards a fairly high acidity which makes it an ideal component of sparkling spumante.

Characteristics: The best wines reveal lemon character with an underlay of almond nuttiness.
