A late budding, early ripening thick skinned variety grown extensively in Spain and an integral component of the Rioja blend. It produces particularly successful long-lived reds in the Ribera del Duero region north of Madrid. It is also an important part of port blends in the Douro where it is known as Tinta Roriz
Characteristics: Deep coloured reds which are not especially alcoholic. The flavours range between leathery tobacco and spice and game.
Where is it found? Throughout Spain and of particular importance in Rioja, Ribera Del Duero, Navarra and Valdepeñas where it is called Cencibel. It is also grown in the Languédoc region of France and more recently it has been planted in the New World - particularly Australia's Victoria.
