An important variety in the Franken vineyards of Germany also widely grown in Alsace.
Characteristics: Examples from Franken can exhibit fine, crisp acidity coupled with a slight earthy character. In Alsace it is a useful variety in terms of quantity for producing generally neutrally flavoured dry whites with little to recommend them.
Where is it found?: Germany, Alsace, Slovenia, Italy's Alto Adige and Switzerland's Valais where it is called Johannisberg.
