Primitivo

It has now been proved with the help of DNA tests, that the Primitivo is one and the same as California's Zinfandel and was probably taken out to the new world by Italian settlers. It is grown extensively in southern Italy where it produces well structured, gutsy wines that are reasonably high in alcohol and fruit.

Characteristics: Deeply coloured with a firm fruitiness and well knit tannins.

Where is it found? Southern Italy and Islands

Wines associated: Manduria, Puglia

Food matches: Mediterranean meat dishes, stuffed vine leaves.
