One of the world's greatest red grape varieties which is almost exclusively confined to Italy's Piedmont district in its finest Barolos and Barbarescos. Here it can produce amongst the most long-lived reds capable of lasting a good half century and often needing many years to shed its youthful tannins and acidity. Earlier-drinking examples are thankfully made.
Characteristics: A great Barolo can develop over time into a wine with alluring aroma combining tar and sometimes violets with a heady richness on the palate. When younger Nebbiolos show power and considerable structure.
Where is it found? Italy particularly Piedmont, a few examples from Australia, California and South America.
