
The second most planted grape in Spain after the Garnacha. It is grown extensively in the southern Rhône and the Languédoc where it is often blended with Grénache and Syrah or Cinsault to make the core of many reds. It is an important variety in France's tiny appellation of Bandol on the Mediterranean. In Spain it is usually called Monastrell. It is also grown in the New World, particularly Australia and California, where it is called Mataro.
Characteristics: Produces powerful wines high in alcohol and tannins which ensures good longevity in its wines. It can however been prone to oxidation unless great care is taken in the winery.
Where is it found?: Spain, particularly Alicante, Murcia and Valencia. Bandol, Languédoc, Rhône. Australia and California.
