The grape of Muscadet and Muscadet alone. As the name implies, it originated in Burgundy but it was outlawed there in the 16th century and started its lonely tramp westwards ending up in Anjou in the Middle Ages. The good people of Nantes couldn't resist plagiarising their neighbours and soon had their vineyards planted with the Melon where it has remained ever since.
Characteristics: Crisp, bright and wonderfully fresh, dry white wines.
