'Malvasia' is a word that is associated with a myriad of different grape varieties and is a corruption of 'Monemvasia', a port in southern Greece that in the Middle Ages became a main trading town for dessert wines from aound the Mediterranean, especially Crete which was, in those days, called 'Candia.'
Malvasia Candida is a form of the grape that was, before phylloxera wiped it out, the most commonly grown variety on the island of Madeira where it is again gaining ground once more.
