Dolcetto is one of the most obliging grape varieties. It is a very early ripener so is grown in areas where other varieties will not work. In Piedmont (Italy) it is planted in the hills where the more noble Nebbiolo hasn't a hope of ripening. Because it has a relatively low acidity, the Piedmontese named it Dolcetto which means 'little sweet one.' The skins contain a high proportion of pigment so even a very short fermentation will achieve good colour and it also delivers on the tannin front.
Characteristics: Gentle, fruity and fresh. Drink young.
