Used to be grown extensively in Cognac where it was used alongside Ugni Blanc and Folle Blanche but it was generally considered inferior for the purposes of fine Cognac production and has since almost disappeared in this area of France. To the south in Gascony, however, it has continued to be harvested with great success producing crisp, fragrant dry whites. Until Chardonnay became so fashionable it used to be California's most favoured white grape variety. It is also popular in South Africa where it is often blended with other varieties.
Characteristics: In its youth, and it should not be aged, it can achieve gentle, melony fragrance with crisp, refreshing acidity.
Where is it found?: Gascony, Cognac, Bourg, Blaye and South Africa.
Wines associated: Cognac and the south of France, also South Africa where it often drops the 'd'.
