An extremely versatile grape variety that originated from Italy, where it is one of the most widely planted red varieties.
Characteristics: Masses of bright, fresh fruit flavours with good levels of natural acidity that make it perfect for blending with other varieties
Where is it found? Widely planted in Italy, coming second only to Sangiovese. It is also widely planted in North America and Argentina, where it can produce deeply coloured juicy wines which have good ageing potential.
Wines associated: Barbera d'Asti, Barbera d'Alba. It is also used widely in the Lombardy and Piedmont regions.
Food matches: Especially good with rich, tomato based dishes.
