Niersteiner Rehbach Riesling Spätlese - 2006 - Weingut Louis Guntrum

From the brilliant 2006 vintage comes this fine Nierstein Riesling with plenty of body and extract in its delicately balanced gentle sweetness.

Rehbach is a small attractive Grosslage (which indicates the wine is derived from more than one grouping of vineyards - usually adjacent). In this case the Grosslage covers the best of Nierstein's sites: Pettenthal, Hipping and Brudersberg. It covers approximatley 65 hectares sloping down to the river Rhein. The soils are deeply reddish in colour being of slate, red sandstone and heavy loam and are ideal for the production of top quality Riesling wines. The origin of the the name is generally agreed to derive from "Roter Bach" (Red Stream) since, after heavy rains, the water running off from the hillside is reddish coloured.

The Louis Guntrum cellars lie on the banks of the Rhein between Oppenheim and Nierstein. The 11th generation, Louis Konstantin Guntrum, the sole owner, is managing the estate today.

The family's roots go back to 1648, to the small village of Wörrstadt in Rheinhessen. Ever since, the Louis Guntrum family has been growing grapes and making wine. The 8th generation, Louis Jean George Guntrum, built today's Estate building in 1923 - it offers a perfect and spacious environment to produce some of the finest wines from Germany, but also impresses with its stunning location directly adjacent to the Rhein river.

Guntrum owns vineyards in Oppenheim (Sackträger, Herrenberg, Kreuz) and in Nierstein ( Ölberg, Pettenthal and Hipping) together with a number of other smaller vineyards.
