Kaseler Nies'Chen Riesling Kabinett
-
2003
-
Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt
Ref: A090803
The vintage 2003 where temperatures soared to over 40 degrees on some summer days produced enormously high natural sugar levels in the Rieslings. This has resulted in a big juicy and intense Ruwer Riesling with a honeyed, peachy complexity that will develop well over the medium term. Drink now until 2008.
The Kaseler Nies'chen domain is the best domain in the Ruwer valley. The Kesselstatt vineyard owns 4.4 hectares; they are situated above the old St. Irminen convent (also owned by Kesselstatt). The Nies'chen is a south-facing slope with an incline of 60°. One finds sparse slatey soil with hard blue slabs of shale here; this is what makes the wine's taste so distinctive. The wines display high minerality and frequently have the aroma of blackcurrants.
Von Kesselstatt focuses on the natural characteristics of the vineyards and applies the utmost care to maintain the natural fertility of the soil. Yields are held very low between 40 and 55 hl per hectare by pruning and green harvest. Fertilization is conducted according to organic principles and all means are geared towards support of the natural ecosystem.
The knights of von Kesselstatt first arrived in the Duchy surrounding the town of Trier as early as the 14th century.
The Kesselstatt Palace, situated in the heart of Trier opposite the Cathedral is one of the most remarkable examples of Baroque architecture north of the Alps and was home to the Estate and its wines from 1746 until 1999. The entire Palace, including the inner-courtyard was lovingly restored to their original glory by Gunther Reh following his aquisition of the Estate in 1978.Today the Palace is a thriving cultural centre and popular meeting place with its winebar and Kesselstatt restaurant. In 1983, Annegret Reh together with husband Gerhard Gartner succeeded her father as head of the Estate. In 1999, together with their long-serving team they transfered the entire wine operation to purpose built facilities on the River Ruwer at Schloss Marienlay.
Annegret and Gerhard Gartner have, over the past decade been able to achieve the almost impossible, that delicate balance between a successful working relationship and private life. Inseparable both from each other and their love for food and wine.
Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt today ranks among the most prestigious and renowned Riesling Estates on the Moselle and indeed throughout the whole of Germany.
